Maybe cycling is having a positive impact on my rowing.  Having been out on three consecutive club runs, I have just posted my fastest 10k since 2014 (when all my PBs were set).

I'm following Pete's plan loosely and I'm at 7000 metre point this week. Today's plan was just a row to 7000 and if I had more in me just keep going to I got tired.

The last time I went for 10000m I had a ~4min rest at 6000m and clocked in at 56min. Today I manged a 48min 10000m without even trying, I was just steady rowing along, not going for records.

All my rowing times includes warmup and calming the dog down after the waterrower starting up beep* and that she don't understand what the heck I'm doing on that thing.

I'm quite surprised that I managed to do this time. I think I can even get to 45min with a bit more work. This was times I was sure I would never get fast/good enough on a rowing machine.

*that beep turning on the machine is loud but not smoke alarm loud as the your are done - on time/distance - BEEEEEEEEEEEEP ala Line of Duty recording length. I have stopped using it cause you can hear it across the house and the dog goes mental and your ears nearly bleed.

I do one of the medium sessions I get sent to me by Concept (or one of the three I've amended
by myself):

10 x 500 metres, with 30 seconds easy rowing between intervals.
12 x 500 metres, with 30 seconds easy rowing between intervals.
8 x 1000 metres, with 60 seconds easy rowing between intervals.

for long sessions I like 3 intervals of descending length - so 20mins, 16 mins, 12 mins or 5k, 4k, 3k with a 2 min break between them to stand up and have a quick stretch.

For higher intensity it's 8 or 10 x 500 at about my 2k pace, or 10 x 250 at quicker than 2k pace, either with 3 mins break if I want to nearly recover or 1 min if I want to make life hard.

We do an annual 'widowmaker' at the club
1k - 2 min rest
2 x 500m - 2 min rest
4 x 250 - 1 min rest
8 x 125 - 30 seconds rest
4 x 250 - 1 min
2 x 500 - 2 min
1 x 1k.

all at about 2k pace.  It's awful.

Did the marathon a couple of weeks ago.  Wasn't in the best of shape mentally - tired from work.  Ended up 2 seconds outside the previous year's time.  Mr Consistency.  Oddly the marathon mark was reached about 4-and-a-half minutes quicker during the 50k but that doesn't count.

What is this 2k pace you refer to? :-)

[Edit: 30 strokes per minute?]

Here's today's Concept medium session:

MEDIUM
2000m, 1500m, 1000m, 500m / 3 min easy Row :
Four intervals of 2000m, 1500m, 1000m and 500m, with three minutes of rest in between each piece.

the split pace you average when you do 2k flat out, 100%, puking at the end, race piece.  Mines about 1.50, *quite* a lot slower than it used to be  :-[ (but lots better than it was six months ago!  ;D)

I tried the "Windowmaker" session. It's hard. I have never raced, but was at my limit.
None of this  . I attempted to stay at 30 strokes per minute (and more) as long as I
could on the intervals. A good 55 minute workout.

[Edit: Just checked and spotted that I did an extra 250m at the beginning without realising it].

A few benefit from 2 months of rowing.

I got space between my arms and waist. Notice today while out walking when I looked that the shadow as the sun was directly behind me.

Something I haven't seen for years.

I found my power ball, these grip training gyro things. I was trying to use it while I was sick some years ago and struggled with the strength in my hands. Yesterday I spun it up and I managed a much longer session than I have ever managed.

So even with a very lose grip on the "ores" rowing build up strength on your hands.

Wow what happened there.

I'm at 8500m on Pete's plan. Friday I rowed the full distance and felt good and was thinking should I go longer or have a beer, beer won as sun was out.

Yesterday was day off, so today was I went for 10000m, nice and easy 22/m. With 3000 to go I went for it and upped to 25/m and I took 2min of my best time, which is now 46min.

I would never have expected that I would get near to 45min.

32 seems to my magic number. At the start 5000m was hit at 32min, then 6000, now today I got 7000m in on the dot. Not bad for 3 months rowing.

I stumbled back into a boat recently with a bunch of old lags, courtesy of a mate from the days when I could actually do it.
I've enjoyed that so much that I bought myself a sculling boat after a 30 year gap.  Wobble wobble!

hehe good luck.

After a few trips to the Lakes and along with some idle scrolling of the interweb's rabbit holes. I'm thinking about joining a course to build my own canoe. Spend many a summer trips in one :)

Did I see Mike OTP driving a CUBC launch yesterday (following an eight that was apparently getting close to me, sculling the other way)?

You did!
That's the crew racing at Henley in a couple of weeks. Substitute Cox tho, who is a lovely guy but not great at steering!

Thought it was you as you came back past our stage. I'm just bimbling about with no race licence this year, so happy enough to pull in if required. I wish you & them well for Henley (no doubt with the regular cox who, presumably, can steer and does not drive the coach nuts). Out again this evening for me.

Just the a 30min slow row along 20 spm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH2br4dUmTE

Boy is it hard to hold a stead 20, I tend to climb up to 22-23spm without thinking. Even with a "slow/easy" row I still managed to come away in a need of a shower.

Started off on a 10000 today, a bit slow. So the last 15min and over 3000m I had to do harder than I've done before.

But 10000m in 44m10s ain't bad for this old lump of lard.

My 100th (recorded) row, since mid March, was done today: 13432, in 1h2m.

And I'm now a finisher of the British Rowing Online "Row the channel" Challenges* too.

* woollypigs does a little dance

This is my "stats". Tracked by a smartwatch**. I have taken a photo of the computer in the waterrower of what I have done when I could breath again.

Total rows   100

Total dist   627681
Avg dist   6277
Longest distance   13432

Total time   51:02:09
Avg time   0:30:37
Longest time   01:02:36

Avg Agv heart Rate   102***
Max avg Heart rate   133

Total move min   2780
Avg move   28
Max move   68

Calories   38280****
Avg Cal   383
Max Calories   820

Row the Channel    39806
Done   41782
Left to do    -1976 (yes I rowed to far, silly me, but I was enjoying myself)

Now I got all these "numbers" in google sheet, I'm going to teach myself how to make funky graphs. Just like you see the pro's have ;)

* Looking at these Challenges, I've noticed that I would be in second place on the Row the Atlantic, if you go for my age group and rowing machine if I had joined since day one ;)
** when it works, about 6 rows it failed to record. Also heartrate on a smartwatch on the arm isn't the best when you are rowing
***  yes there is two avg's here, this is the avg taken from the smartwatch and then it's the avg off then all :)
**** yes this is silly, the smartwatch will not record a correct number. But as someone said it will give you an idea if this row was harder/easier than the other rows. I tend to round down to the nearest 100, when I try to guess how much nom I can eat in a day. This kinda works as I'm gradually losing weight.

Well done woollypigs, top effort.

I have similar problems with a smart watch either on the erg or when sculling; too much movement for a good contact, I guess. I bought a cheap chest strap (Moofit, identical to a Wahoo) which is recognised seamlessly and works well.

I'm considering Zoom Ergos which start up again next week; one of my club colleagues was a regular earlier this year / last year and enjoyed them. Seems like several options to choose from too (steady state, intervals, stretches & other exercises, etc.).

Concept 2 are organising their usual Fall Team Challenge, as many meters as possible as a team from 15th September to 15th October, which neatly coincides with me getting back on the Concept II after enjoying cycling in the summer.  Any one else interested in forming a team.

I'm on a waterrower and just did day one of doing 10000m every day of the month.

Just because, no team, just me.

Not sure I can join either as my computer don't have the necessary to connect to the outside.

I might give myself the upgrade for crimbo if I'm still into this rowing malarkey

Well that might be a dumb thing I did today.

Especially if I'm "supposed" to row 10000m everyday of Sept. I put on John from RowAlong and the 22spm play list from Reddit*.

I did 7000m at 22SPM and felt well, spend 30sec faffing with the music and put the 24SPM playlist on and did 10000m at 43m43s. If I who don't have any rhythm do this, there is no way I'm going to listen to Progressive Trance or what ever they tend to play in gyms or get fit videos.

I soo need to take it easy tomorrow, might have to dig up some slow jazz or reggae.

*Got a list for each speed 18-34SPM
