I would not be surprised if it's a misguided attempt at stopping spam.
My spam folder often gets non-spam bulk mail.

I am in the habit of always noting any numbers/codes before closing pages so I am not dependent on confirmation emails.
Just as well.

A politics forum I frequent is up the Swannee this morning which means I've got to do some work instead.

Walking along with my son while he smoked his stinky roll-up, just after we passed a bin (with those stinking stub-out things for cigs), he drops it on the pavement, stubs it out with his boot and kicks it into a crack between slabs. First I had a go at him. Then his girlfriend had a go at him. Then I kicked him in the arse, literally (but not very hard).

I hate it when people drop their fags on the pavement.

I hate it when people's discarded fag ends get blown en-masse into my front yard.  Yech.  And their fag wrappers and scratch cards.

In the 70s I was down in Croydon on a course with a couple of colleagues. One of them came into my room for a natter, in the course of which he knocked the ash off his fag onto the carpet and remarked "I love staying in hotels, you can do things you wouldn't at home".
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Does this include defenestrating colleagues who've just filthied-up your carpet?

What, and litter the pavement outside? Tut.

Back in the 60s he'd have been tossing the butt as well.

Is that a euphemism?

I see, so you mention the fact on the phone that the train is quite busy but you still sit in the aisle seat with your small bag in the window seat.

Idiot.

Hmm. I don't have too much of a problem with this: I strongly prefer the aisle seat and will always sit in it if I can, so if someone wants to use the window seat there's going to have to be some dialogue.

"Excuse me, is that seat taken?" is exactly the same whether my bag is on the seat, on the luggage rack or on the floor.

Maybe. Fair enough on a quiet train but when it's busy I think at least a gesture needs to be made.

What sort of gesture? I tend not to be terribly proactive in offering up such a seat, assuming that if anyone wants to use it they'll make that clear, though I'll give them access with a good grace. Equally, there are some journeys where, as the latecomer, I'll choose not to ask, preferring to stand rather than get someone to shuffle out of my way so I can shoot down and then, ten minutes later, having to do the whole thing in reverse.

Were there folk standing on this train?

Sorry, but that attitude is bloody rude and inconsiderate.  If you only buy one ticket, you get one seat (if you're lucky) so if the train is at all busy, then you make sure you occupy only one seat, and make it easy for others to access the seats that they have paid for.  If the train is really empty, then its OK to spread a little, but if someone wants to sit by the window and your bag is there, you move it, without being asked.

Yeah. The painfully shy or timid person who finds it hard to pluck up courage to ask gets left standing.

Bugger.  Both the local decent restaurants close at 3 on Sunday. (Mrs B's mumble-tieth)
How are you supposed to enjoy a fine meal at 1 o'clock?  On a Sunday that is breakfast time.

No. We can't go on Saturday.  Mrs. B has just buggered off for a stupidly expensive weekend of spa-ing and pampering at Celtic Manor with her girl friends.
No.  We won't be going anywhere for pub grub.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Dear Odeon Cinemas,
Thank you so much for the email, timestamped 18.25 today confirming my ticket purchase for today's 15.00 screening of 'Florence Foster Jenkins'.
We enjoyed the film, thank you. As it was PG, I came with my Mum.
Please explain why it takes 24 hours to confirm electronic purchase of these tickets.
Yours etc

I'll see your couple of hours and raise you the fifty-mumble days which have elapsed between my receiving an item bought on ebay and the receipt of an e-mail telling me it's been despatched ???

I have this evening purchased an item from ebay.
I note the vendor is situated on the other side of Brent, some 10km away.
Wonder when I'll receive said item and how far it will travel...
