Shetland islands a stupid question
« on: 08 March, 2019, 10:40:10 am »
OK this may seem like a stupid question but planning on doing a tour of the Shetland islands later this year. My question is will my phone service (EE) still work there or will it say I am abroad and have to pay extra to use it? I am assuming as it is the UK it will work fine but want to check.
Thanks

Can't say for certain about Shetland but my EE worked well in the Orkneys. If you watch the TV series Shetland they all use mobiles so I would assume there is some service there.

definitely UK my mobile works there no probs

although the Shetlands were given as dowry by a norwegian king to the scottish king in the 15th century (I think) they are currently a part of the UK. The inhabitants may prefer to differ, but they're nice people overall.

If you want to annoy the locals, call them the 'Shetlands' or the 'Orkneys'.

And yes, the UK mobile networks should all work fine. Though maybe not much on Three, despite their adverts with the dancing ponies...

A FB friend of mine is currently in Shetland and she is posting some wonderful pictures of her holiday there. So it seems she has no problem with her connectivity.

No problems for me with EE on recent trips to Shetland with bike. IIRC, signal was good in Lerwick, Bressay, Scalloway and the Burras In 2017, we stayed for a week in Mid-Yell and had a mile or so’s ride up the hill to get a signal.

Shetland is part of the UK so you won't pay roaming charges.

I don't know how the signal will be in the more sparsely populated areas but I don't think it's a problem near settlements.

My first ISP, Zetnet, was based in Shetland. The locals are pretty tech-savvy...

EE's coverage checker map suggests almost all of Shetland has coverage outdoors.
(I used ZE1 0RB, which had been my base in 1989, and zoomed in and out.)

And put them in a box!

You'll be fine. I had signal even as we tried for the coast opposite Saxa Vord RRH in 2017. And that's about as far north as you can go.

There's a "famous" phone box on Unst and a recreation of a long-ship by the side of the road just outside Haroldswick.

Hope you don't mind the wind.

I almost got blown off the main island when I went out for a run on one trip

You might as well. The car ferries run regularly (enough).

The Gardiesfauld Hostel on Unst is nice. Option of camping outside if you want.

Unfortunately the brewery on Unst has now closed. But there is a gin distillery if you like that sort of thing.

I live in Lerwick and one of the real pleasures is that if I ride out of town, if I'm very lucky, I can't get a phone signal.

I have that in my shed, for some reason, my phone never works in there when my wife is trying to call me  ;)
