Well realistic can be - um - interesting.  See a scene in Warsaw 44 I alluded to above.

Get too realistic and it's going to traumatise people.
It's a reverse Elvis thing.

Fury is a bit silly, as it's all very choreographed;
- EXT: BOMBED OUT FRENCH VILLAGE
Soldiers are moving cautiously down the street. German Machinegun opens fire and tracers fly every
FOCUS ON SOLDIERS LEGS legs gets chopped in half with blood splattting everywhere
FOCUS ON ANOTHER SOLDIERS HEAD head explodes with brain parts splatting into the lens
FOCUS ON SOLDIERS ARM; arm gets chopped off

Etc, etc. Rather than focusing on the story/battle it's just trying to shock you, focusing on the gore.
The color coded Star Wars tracers were also annoying.
I did like it's attempt at showing how even the US soldiers lost their humanity, but it was rather short lived, as we of course, needed some heroes.

Capsule

Quote
A helpless British astronaut suffering Hypoxia is locked in a dysfunctional Cold War space Capsule orbiting earth. With limited contact with his own team, the deeply suspicious Russians and Americans attempt to intervene... One Man, One Mission, One Choice... Who will he Trust?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3108244

While it wasn't an epic space extravaganza along the lines of Gravity or The Martian, it was an enjoyable movie about what would happen if Britain  had been the first to get a Man In Space during the height of the Cold War.

Lee Child's Jack Reacher in 'One Shot' (I believe it was) yesterday.

Having started it around 5pm, my wife and I eventually finished watching it just after 9pm.

We have never, ever, been interrupted so much watching a film. First her sister phoned (after 10 minutes in), then someone knocked on the door selling iced buns to raise money for a local school something-or-other, then we had to prepare supper. Started watching again, then a neighbour called round wanting to borrow a batch of CDs. Okay, off we go again! "Knock, knock knock!" Another neighbour called round, explaining he could get back on the roof when it stopped raining, to deal with the leak with the skylight. Yep, okay, good. He's gone. We start again. No, wait — "Time to have a bath before supper" my wife says, so that's all done. We then sit down again, watching the film having us tea. Phew.
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

A 1992 film called Hero about a lowlife fence who inadvertently saves 54 people from a crashed plane. Surprisingly good.

Yup, plus Geena Davis and Andy Garcia.  Has a sort-of 1950s feel to it.

Noticed on IMDB that it's Accidental Hero in English.

Last night we watched an Austrian (German? Czech?) film called Sarajevo, about the investigation of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Interesting.

Flashdance.  Quite amusing really.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople Absolutely stunning. And hilarious ...and occasionally emotional. Don't really know how to describe this, so just watch it!.

Flashdance. Footloose. Flatulence. All equally entertaining.

"not much substance" ??

I can't wait to hear your reviews of the other two  ;D

I really enjoyed LaLaLand. But N enjoyed it even more, she was high as a kite [in the Mary Poppins way] :)
The issue for me was the songs - I've never enjoyed musicals that don't have killer songs, and only a few do. With the right songs I am as happy watching a musical as anyone.
These songs were perfectly OK, just not great. WITHOUT the songs it would have been a really nice movie anyway!

Really lovely film.  Reminded me of Pixar's  "Up".

Rogerzilla watching Flashdance and finding it "Quite amusing"  is like when I found out about Freddie Mercury and George Michael.  I honestly didn't know.

The problem I have with musicals is the singing*.  I'm OK with them apart from that one single thing.
I just can't get my head around the fact that people are singing in a film.  I suppose it's better than musical theatre, when the principles all speak their lines in a sort of monotone, mock-opera, singing voice (See. Les Mis).
I have a theory that we could all sing like that if we wanted to , but most of us are conscious of appearing a bit daft.

*Clearly The Blues Brothers is brilliant and an exception.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Bob Geldof was up for the part of the father in Flashdance but he turned it down because the premise was too silly and they don't have giant cisterns at dance auditions.

Watched Warsaw44 based on the review upthread. I liked it, the tram tacking shot of wartime Warsaw was fascinating cgi i guess, brilliantly done.

You want lack of substance?

We watched 'The 100ft journey'.
Given the general plot and the director, I expected a bit more. 'Chocolat' was pretty good.

'The 100ft journey' was vapid in the extreme. Not even the presence of some really, really good actors and very pretty scenery could rescue it. Perfectly pleasant but I've drunk more exciting glasses of water.

Ethel and Ernest.   It reminded me very much of my own parents' story, which began around 10 years later. Slightly different attitudes - my mum started her own business in the late 20s which Ethel would never have done, but my maternal grandmother was a lady's maid before she was married and she passed on the snobbery that goes with the job.  We only ever had ordinary cutlery at home but she always called it "the silver", etc.

Great film.

(Hmm, idle thought - is welding done with acetylene? I thought that was used for cutting holes in steel, not gluing it together.)
