Aren't they just bacteria farms?

They are if you let them be.

Probably one of the reasons for them falling apart prematurely.

Am I the only one who had to google to find out that flannels were the thing my grandparents used. I thought this was a reference to grungecore.

I suppose if you are in your twenties or younger, you might not know what a flannel is.
A young, hip and trendy person, with their finger on the pulse, like ian, knows that flappy flannels are de rigueur for gravel riding.
Riding a concrete path through the nebulous and chaotic future.

It's funny how things vary from place to place.
When I lived in Greece, my ex was managing holiday lets.
She had occasion to ask the owner of the lets to supply some plugs for the bathroom wash basins as such a request had been made by a number of UK guests.
The request was met with horror of the 'Why on earth would you do this?' variety.
I confess to  never having deployed the plug in a bathroom wash basin.
In Greece or anywhere else.
I always have the plug in when I'm doing anything with my contact lenses - I'm paranoid about losing them down the plug hole!

Needs a 'Use one occasionally ' option.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Needs a 'Use one occasionally ' option.
Prob also needs an "only after one of those no.2s like a pot of Marmite" option as well.

I suppose I’d use one if I was washing armpits at the sink rather than in a shower.

I was just going to suggest that the proliferation of showers may be contributing/have contributed to the decline of the facecloth for this reason. We used them when I was growing up because we didn't have a shower and a bath was a faff reserved for occasional use.

Flannel for a quick wash, but use sponge for the shower

I use mine only in the morning, for face soaking with hot water prior to a wet shave, and for removing the residue after. Most washbasins outside our home are (for me) too small to comfortably splash from, and I’m always hitting my head on either the taps or the shelf stupidly mounted about 18” above the basin.

The normal green ones or non-scratch spontex?
Not especially helpful or mature
