Title: Flamborough Head 1000
Post by: frere yacker on 17 June, 2008, 12:52:40 pm
Strangely, this ride hasn't had much buzz recently even though it is only 2 months away.  It doesn't even have it's own thread as far as I can tell.

Usual question, who is doing this ride?

More generally, this is a basic event for which there are no sleep facilities.  I suspect, however, that many of us would welcome the comforts of a bed and a shower part way through the ride.  There are various ways that this could be achieved:

- Group book a hostel
- Book some travelodge rooms
- Offers from "local" forumites to kip on their floor etc

I'm happy to help organise either of the first two options.  The third option would need volunteers to come forward.

For reference, I believe the route is:

Galashiels 0km
Longtown 82km
Richmond 210km
Ripon 252km
Flamborough Head 362km
Ripon 473km
Richmond 518km
Longtown 646km
Gretna Services 655km
Happendon Services 744km
Moffat 790km
Hawick 860km
Kelso 894km
Berwick On Tweed 931km
Kelso 968km
Galashiels Arrivee 1002km

Any suggestions for suitable stops welcome.  I reckon something around Ripon and then Moffat would work well?

Sleep plans?  Or are you just going to suck it and see?

I should admit that I'm going to arrange something regardless of whether anyone else wants to share.  I am sick to the back gills of slumping over diner tables or shivering to sleep in bus shelters.  I'm also a bit jaded with smelling and looking like a tramp at the end of a long ride.

I want to be rehabilitated into civilised society.

I had planned to ride this but have just learned that I now cant - work commitments on 18th & 19th August.   :'(  :'(

My plan B is Perston - Aberdeen - Preston over the "weekend" 23/24/25th starting Edinburgh and heading north first - 400 back to EH, 300, 300.

Failing that I'll shelve notions of a 1000k until 2010.

I am looking at booking the motel at Abington services, so depending what time on Sunday night I arrive I have the option of  stopping (720km) or continuing to Happendon and returning (770km). The plan is to ride through Saturday night.

Usual offer, if you are passing my way (which you might or might not do on the Richmond - Ripon bit, depending on your route) feel free to come and avail yourselves of Chez Tiermat's facilities....

We are thinking about it, but need to feel really up for it.  We'll probably enter and think about it closer to the time.  I'm a definite maybe for having some sleep controls.  Do you mean Ripon in both directions or just at 475km?

Also, Ripon-Flamborough Head.  Does this include Sutton Bank?  Is the rest of the ride a hill-fest?

Personally I think somewhere nice to sleep would be rather nice.  I have never slept in a bus stop and have no intention of leaving it til the 2nd night of a 1000 before finding out if I can do it.

All embryonic.  I need to sit down and do the math.  As you picked up, Ripon allows use of the room in both directions (provided timings work) but 250km is likely to be a little bit early in the ride for a sleep stop.

Other thoughts:

Based on my LEL experience, sleep stops at Flamborough Head and between Gretna/Happendon might work.  This gives legs of around 350km each; potentially 4-6 hours sleep each night.

Have one proper sleep stop on the second night (as suggested by TT).  Between Gretna/Happendon might work in this case.  Probably allowing 6-10 hrs sleep for most of us (assuming don't sleep too long on the road).

I think legs of about 350-380 km would be the most preferable.  From a 6am start, I *might* make 370ish km in 18-20 hours (based on BCM experience) depending on hilliness.  Ripon on the way back would probably be too late for me (but 250 km is probably too early).  I will almost certainly want to have some form of actual sleep on 2 nights.  Bus shelters are really not ideal for me (especially as I don't do public toilets*).  Like yourself, I have no desire to be mistaken for a tramp at any stage of the ride.  :)

* A very long story that goes way back into childhood

Look out for some people this Sunday afternoon/evening.

The Border Raid 600 goes through Ripon at 556km (with the finish in Aldbrough St John at 607km at 10pm). The time limit would put them in Ripon at about Sunday 6.30pm at the latest. The faster people will be through before midday.

We come down from the Dales through Leyburn and all the way along the A6108 into Ripon and the Spa Gardens Cafe. Then out North through Hutton Conyers, Wath, Howgrave, Burneston, Exeby, Leeming, Kirkby Fleetham, Great Langton, Scorton, Middleton Tyas and finish at Aldbrough St John.

I'll be about, but might be a little off track for you, I am in Northallerton (well Romanby which is on the Leeming/Thirsk side of Northallerton).

You are still welcome, I'll make sure I buy extra cakes :)

With 25km to go of a 600 I think most people will be wanting to get it over and done with rather than stop, but it's a kind offer anyway.

Looks like there's quite a bit of the FH1000 used in Border Raid 600 although maybe not exactly the same route (Aldbrough St John, Alston, Longtown, Newcastleton, Kelso, Scott's View, Traquair, Peebles, Moffat, Annandale Water, Longtown, Penrith, Sedburgh, Leyburn, Ripon, Aldbrough St John). I'll try and remember to have a look at what's available near Moffat and Ripon.

Might consider this if next weeks 600 goes to plan, but I would be looking to sleep after about 600k on the Sunday night after riding right through Saturday night.

Apologies for the blast from the past. Does anyone have a GPX for this route?

It pre dates mass GPS use I’d say. Megajoules was the organiser and might be able to help you with where it goes.
