Title: Giro
Post by: fuzzy on 02 May, 2010, 12:03:02 pm
This time next weekend will see me in the early stages of taking over the Idiot Box and recording the daily highlights of The Giro. We were not able to sort the logisitics of spending time at the race so TV will have to do. At least SWMBO is still evidencing an acceptance, allmost an interest, in my obsession.

I'm looking forward to the opening of the Grand Tour season

Unfortunately, I'll miss most of it as I'll be 'stuck' on a beach beach in Florida listening to the oil lapping on the beach!

Wiggins for the win.  I think they will treat it as a GC warm up for the real thing - that being the TdF but not this year.

But wait for the shock to drop of the 5 to 8 suspected dopers currently under investigation by the UCI.
Any time now and it will come out.

6 riders to be named:
2 x Italians, 2 x Spaniards, 1 x Russian, 1 x Slovenian

...and Pellizotti has just been withdrawn from Liquigas press conference.  So that'll be one of the Italians!

An excellent 5th place for Adam Blythe today. I saw him riding grass-track at Mildenhall in 2004. As a 14-year-old he was mixing it with men twice his age and size, and despite the disparity was holding his own and winning. I was so impressed I made a mental note of his name, thinking I'd probably hear of him again someday. I think we'll be hearing a lot more of him before long.

 That's uncanny - that's pretty much word for word what I just saying to Mrs C, except I was referring to the velodrome at Meadowbank rather than grass track at Mildenhall.

But if someone didn't want to know the result would they really be so dim as to start paging through a thread entitled 'Giro' and clearly discussing the various stage results ?
Anyway, I'll follow your lead and not say who won but I will add that Wednesday will be of interest to fans of David Millar  :)

Slightly OT:-

One thing that occurred to me while watching the prologue time trial was that despite what looked like drops of rain on the camera, the riders were still shooting round sharp bends with huge amounts of white markings underneath them (wide pedestrian crossings, lane arrows etc.)...  I was expecting to see some spills as a result of that but don't recall any in the portion of the program I saw.

I realise these guys are professionals with infinitely better bike handling skills than me and that they have ultra-grippy (tubular) tyres on, but is that really enough to make as significant a difference as that, or are the white lines in Holland painted with something different to those in the UK?

Got a "hunger flat" on the run-in according to his DS, Sean Yates.

Evans was brilliant yesterday, in fact he's been great all season, but chapeau to everyone for riding at those speeds on those bikes in that weather on those roads!

Yep, and yesterday's stage was yet another highly enjoyable one. I thought Sky were making a good stab at leading the run-in for a bunch sprint but they seemed to disintegrate in the narrow, twisty-turny streets of the closing few km. Some of those corners looked really hairy at the speeds they were going. All the top three finishers were awesome. A sprint like that takes some bottle and phenomenal bike-handling skills - though obviously very different to the skills required on Saturday's stage.

I really would like to have seen Cav and Hushovd involved in a finish like that.

Yeah, I read that. Interesting. I must admit I don't know much about him. From what I can tell, he's never really figured much in the big tours... but then neither had Wiggo until last year.

What about David Arroyo? He's a very strong climber, isn't he?

Title: Re: Giro
Post by: JT on 19 May, 2010, 10:58:11 pm
This Giro is Xavier Tondo's first ever grand tour - he could struggle in the third (difficult) week.

Arroyo's in a good position. Good climber and with a strong-ish, disciplined team. Not sure about his time trialling ability but the remaining TT's are not that long and one's a mountain TT in any case.

Talking of which, it looks like Vino and Evans are scuppered in that respect. Got to be some recriminations after today, though neither seems to have much of a team left to blame. That's got to affect their chances, surely?

Wiggo, on the other hand, is getting great support from his boys. Froome's been very impressive so far.

Steve Cummings would get my vote but Froome's pulled his weight too.

The BMC team is really weak. Evans must have been jolly unhappy at Lotto to swap them for that lot. Today I did actually see that Cadel had a team mate in his vicinity, on the flat at least, which is probably the first occasion since the team time trial.

I think his victims (a Lampre and a Katusha rider) both had team-mates up the road with Vino's group and were sitting on the front of the peloton but understandably not putting much effort into the chase. But I may be wrong.

...

A superhuman feat of climbing. I really hope it was clean.  :-\

I'm afraid to say I very much doubt it.
Well ...
if you read this blog (I've forgotten who linked to this, sorry) it suggests that Basso and Evans both rode with power outputs below the sort of figures calculated during "less clean" times. Which suggests they are more clean. Probably. Draw your own conclusions, I'm just supplying the data ...

On Bicycles, and.... what else is there?: running the numbers from the Zoncolan (2010 Giro d'Italia stage 15) (http://djconnel.blogspot.com/2010/05/running-numbers-from-zoncolan-2010-giro.html)

To be fair to Basso, he had been taking it relatively easy compared to other riders on previous stages, so probably wasn't as tired going into the stage. He gets the benefit of the doubt for now.

What is clear from this year's Giro so far is that certain riders aren't as capable of turning in those kind of performances day after day in the same way that they used to be. Which I take as a positive sign.

I have always like Basso.  It was following an article in Cycle Sport that I decided to follow him as a rider.  Then just after that Puerto broke.  Even though I didn't know him and had never actually met him I felt very let down and disappointed.
Then he served his time and met with that bit of controversy and then he seemed to go nowhere in any of the races he entered.

But of late he is flying and doing a great job.

I just so hope it is clean.

Basso has also has the obviously talented Nibali with him on alot of the mountain stages, while his rivals have been mostly alone.  Basso, Nibali and Scarponi worked really well together on stage 19, which probably clinched it for Basso, and absolutely buried themselves over the last few kilometres to gain vital seconds. It was good that the Liquigas boys gave Scarponi the win for his help.  An absolutely stunning days racing.  Made stage 20 look boring in comparison, although Evans showed he is still strong.

Cant see any major changes today though, Basso looks set to win.

I like Basso too, and was dissapointed when he became implicated in Puerto. Yes he has served his time, but he has been repentant (unlike Vino)   and looks to be riding clean, if the numbers are anything to go by. I'd like to see him win today

As much as it pains me to not back an Aussie ( I have never really enjoyed watching or listening to Evans ) I too would love to see Basso win.

You are dead right about the comparison between him and Vino too.

Basso is a doper. Oops sorry, that's not quite true. He paid Fuentes to manipulate his blood but never actually used it because he didn't need to.

The man stinks and not only because he is a doper

I find Evan awfully hard to like.  He spent a long time as a wheelsucker, very little attacking, which could have been more down to the fact he didnt have any kind of team around him. He put that wonderful ride in to win the worlds, and he's put some cracking attacking rides in this year, and hads given some real entertainment value, but he isn't easy to warm to.

It's funny how assistance from teammates is treated so differently from "wheelsucking".

So it's 2010 and we have a fairly well established drug cheat winning a grand tour.

Plus ca change...

Anyone remember the 2006 Giro when Simoni said Basso asking him for money on a stage to let him win?  (his lawyer later withdrew the comments on his behalf)

Do post your list of really nice and jolly fair riders that would be in your perfect stage race. If you can't think of any grounds to exclude people, go read the last thread on this subject.

eeeerk, slightly confused now....

So are you saying that ANY winner would have produced this comment from you/Tewdric?

I read it more like
"we shouldn't allow these people to continue racing against the other decent riders". [simplifying enormously obviously]

It is much easier just to read people's posts and interpret them using the words to deduce the meaning  ;)
