They ARE gentler. Probing was shown to convert small cracks that would possibly repair and seal themselves, into portals that decay, so probing was stopped in favour of watchful waiting and X-rays.

Eye test yesterday and out of that I need a second opinion of something they picked up.  Originally told referral letter wouldn't be ready till today. But whilst I was choosing some frames for reading glasses was told to hang around and she'd get the letter done so didn't need to come back.  Told NHS appointment with eye specialist would probably take two months.  Walked to GP from opticians and dropped off letter.  Got a text today and I have appointment with the eye specialist at the hospital for Monday. Wow, was expecting the two month delay to be even longer. Now here's hoping what they picked up isn't too serious.

So do I.  I have a copy of the referral letter and it requests a routine appointment. There are some things in the letter that concern me but until the appointment is completed I think best not to speculate on outcome. I'm staying away from search engines.

I staved/jammed a finger playing football way back in late March. it swelled up and bruised nicely and after a few days I managed to remove my wedding ring (with a fair amount of swearing, washing up liquid and a bit of pain).

Coming up 3 months later I still can't get my wedding ring back on over the proximal interphalangeal joint.

I have full motion in the finger although I do get some mild discomfort in the joint when clenching my fist, but it doesn't stop me from doing anything (playing sport, swimming, catching/throwing, typing, picking up things, etc). I don't think there was a fracture, just some ligament damage.

The PIP joint does look a bit swollen on the outside (lateral with palm facing down) compared to my other ring finger.

Is it worth going to minor injuries or should I just leave it a bit longer?

Get the ring resized.

The joint is likely to remain big and if there's a full range of movement, you can't get any improvement.

You can leave a ring at a jeweller while they do the business and get on with your life.

Appointments with healthcare folk will tie you up for hours, for little long-term benefit.

I has similar, a severe knock and small fracture on top joint of right ring finger as a student, still bigger than the other 20 years later, but functionally not inhibited

Did a short & sharp 47k yesterday with much climbing (for me), 700 metres, under the influence of beta-blockers.  Heart didn't go anywhere near max even when I hammered it rather hard, and my average speed was as good as it was 2 or 3 years ago.  Legs didn't seem to suffer any more than they would have pre-BB, although this morning they were a bit sore to the touch.

What I'm wondering now is if, in trying to squeeze a decent performance out of a retarded heart, I'm not at risk of causing something untoward, e.g. enlargement.

Picked up reading glasses today. What a fantastic difference being able to clearly read the top line of the optician reading charts and when using my iPad.

i read this, as someone working in H&S it makes me cringe, especially knowing it could easily have been avoided.

One of the most despairingly avoidable injuries I have read of was a young construction worker (young in the meaning of the law) on his first day on the job, employed on a large concrete pour.  Given no PPE and not experienced enough to question, stood in concrete in trainers and jeans for one shift. Result = both legs amputated below the knee.  Horrific and entirely avoidable.

Blimey. I knew concrete was fairly harsh and could cause chemical burns but didn't realise it could be that severe. How awful.

Anyone got any experience with Prednisolone 5mg tablets?

I ask as the emergency doctor has just seen me: 7 nights without sleeping is excessive and as the normal gout medication was not working, said I should try these.

The Doctor said I should take them as soon as I get home but the Chemist said I shouldn't start the course until the morning as it could cause sleepless nights. I guess as I am not sleeping anyway, it can't harm taking them this evening can it?

Any information gratefully received.

I've not taken these tablets myself, but have prescribed them in the past.

I can't tell from your post how many tablets you've been instructed to take as dosage regimens for different conditions vary hugely. I doubt if one or two tablets would make much difference to your sleep.

I did feel a bit 'buzzy' when I had a hundred times one tablet intravenously...

That's strange. I posted a reply but it isn't showing!

I am to take 6 x 5mg once a day (yes, I did double check that they are all to be taken at once) for five days.

I have just had by tea so have taken then. Lets see what happens!

my son took them short term as an infant, to try and stop his seizures
1) you may put on weight, be ready to be hungry
2)they can chemically induce diabetes symptoms, so if you start feeling extremely thirsty and pee a lot, talk to the doc
3) they can supress the immune system,

thats all I can remember

HK is weaning down on that drug. 30mg isn't a huge amount; she started on double that. Morning dose is better than evening.

Thanks all.

Well the dose I took at 6pm has done nothing so once again it looks like a sleepless night.  I will move to morning doses over the next few days and see my own GP tomorrow even if I have to do a sit in to get seen for some blood tests.

This just isn't right and frankly, I have had enough of the pain.

Edited to add: I managed to sleep sitting up and with my foot in a bowl of cold water from 12.15 to 4am.     Laying down was just impossible as it increased the pain to an unbearable level.

Come 8am I am going to phone my GP and get a further appointment!

I am pleased to report that my routine ultrasound check for aortic aneurism indicated that I hadn't got one. An aneurism, that is. I do have an aorta.

The ultrasound lady commented indelicately that there was an awful lot of gas in my large intestine. This, I told her, was almost certainly on account of the vegetarian meal we had eaten the previous evening.

Aortic aneurysms are drop dead awful and well worth the screening.

Mortality is HUGE once they leak or burst...

Phil, hoping this is efficiency not severity.

Good news and such a relief.  Results of hospital examination is that there is no evidence of retinal detachment or tearing in either eye. But pupils now super dilated due to anesthetic. It's like being on a glaicer with everything superbright.  Have put on my glacier goggles for now till my eyes return to normal.

Yes, I can imagine. I was curious as to why it is that men are 6 times as susceptible as women, and only men are screened.

I don't know why men get this more though I will speculate.

It's obviously more cost-effective to screen those at higher risk.

Men generally have longer torso than women. The abdominal aorta might be partially supported by its branches but has a longer unsupported run in a longer belly.
Men generally have a greater circulating volume.

More men are/were smokers.
