Every time I tour, I'm rubbish at lightweight.  I rode from Kingston to my parents place in Shropshire (150 miles) in early June - pannier load was approximately 15 kilos, which is I think around the two stone mark.

It's noticeable but perfectly manageable.  My local (bike) postie is totally against the ban, as am I.

Mind you, I think the saddle in the picture probably IS a serious H&S risk!

I thought that the health & Safety stuff was EU related. We have to rely more and more on bikes as Dutch postmen.

Sitting in a van instead of pedalling a bike around is going to do wonders for the healt of posties.

Sitting in a van will do wonders for the post office HR department.

I bet they have been sued recently by a postie who fell off or got struck by a vehicle.

Money, not safety, is most likely at the root of this.

The maximum load I ever carried as a postman was slightly over 100kg, consisting of phonebooks.

the post office are self insured and as such deal in house with legal claims, although I'm sure that there would be a conflict if they were dealing in house with a claim against them by one of their own.

It may well be part of overall cost cutting, efficiency savings, good business practise etc.. (ie, however one wishes to view it)

Not this old chestnut again.  Where did HR Review drag that old piece up from?

What a shame - the PO Cycle Maximus look great. I was hoping for more PO cargo bikes. Posties in Cambridge occasionally ask about my bakfiets.

Royal Mail Cycle Delivery

CTC's been campaigning for this on a while.  I'm surprised that HR Review took so long to pick up on it - Royal Mail's plans are hardly news, as they've been talking about this for the last couple of years.

They stopped using bikes round these parts decades ago.

But that is most likely the result of it being hilly and clay heads being overweight lard addicts with a mega arsey jack bastard streak to them.

Seems bizarre given that kiddy seats are rated, in the main, up to 18kg.

I managed to tote by 60kg mum around once too, though I wouldn't have liked to have gone up hill.  She refused when I offered a repeat, can't think why.

Well, if they ride their bikes like they drive their vans, it's no wonder so many of them get injured!

Union pandering to lardy fat bastards who object to any work full stop, not just riding bikes.

I have nothing good to say about my local sorting office.

The union said that 13 cycle delivery postmen and women had been killed at work over the past 15 years, and thousands more injured as the result of road traffic accidents.

They could have included stats for accidents in RM vans and trucks too. I have no idea how they would compare, but it would be interesting to see...

Is there any way to get hold of the numbers killed and injured in collisions with Post Office vehicles?  It's going to be a big number I reckon....

I'm not surprised the union backed the change.  Post Office employees who drive vans get additional pay allowances.

However, the reality is that most of those who currently use bikes won't transfer to jobs where they drive vans.  Instead they'll get to do the rounds on foot, pushing one of those bloody awful trollies.
