Bike fixing jobs on your "to do" list
« on: 15 January, 2011, 02:03:19 pm »
I'll start.

1. Find out why the touring bike is creaking from the front (speed dependent, increases the more weight is put on the front wheel, but the hub feels fine)

2. Replace the 18 RH spokes on the S3X wheel with 284mm spokes 'cos the 286mm have run out of thread.  Spoke calculators don't quite work for DT Revolution spokes, which stretch a lot.

3. Replace the front brake cable on the Inbred and grease the brake bosses.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

1. Remove the shock from the MTB, send the bushing sizes to Fox so they can send me the bitz to fit a new air shock to replace the crappy RST coil spring.

2. Re-dish the back wheel cos I built it wrong.

3. Fit a decent saddle, seatpost and grips.

4. Replce the fork on the RTB, upgrade the brakes, fit the rack.

5. Find out why the Trek's back wheel suddenly developed an enormous kink - I haven't ridden it in yonks . . .

6. Loads of other stuff I hven't thought of.

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

See if I can remember what colour the bikes are. They need a thorough clean.

Replace bearings on the rear wheel (already arrived. I am impressed.)

Remove stripped bolt from front disc

find a new disc for the rear. Ordered.

Bleed the back brake properly.

Ride them more.

1. Sort out the gearing on the Grasshopper. Should I go bit CR or smaller CR and bigger Sprocket
2. Put the Nokon cable outers on the Grasshopper gear cables
3. Consider which new front light I should order for the Gh
4. devise and fix a bladder hanger for the back of the Gh seat
5. Rebuild the back wheel of the Cannondale, probably with the 3x8 hub
6. Try the bouncy fork on the 'dale
7. New saddle for the 'dale
For every complex problem in the world, there is a simple and easily understood solution that’s wrong.

Fit Giles Berthoud mudguards to Mme BB's bike, for no other reason but their shinyness.

1.  Replace the end plug that fell out - before the handlebar punches a hole in my chest if I fall on it.
2.  Clean all bikes.
3.  Sevice hubs on Tifosi and replace chain.
4.  Replace Ergos on hack bike.
5-5,000,000.  Lots of other things.

So saying it is going to make it happen is, it?  #4 has been on the list for well over a year, as I continue to ride with knackered shifters... which you can do with Campag's :P

2. Fit rear dual pivot brake to road bike.
3. Fit tyres to spare set of wheels for my fixed.
4. Build up rear wheel for my shopping bike using the 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub.

Spending time on bikes is on hold for January, but...
Wash bikes.
Work out what's going on with Mrs Dan's front mech.
Its probably time for a spot of grease all round.

  • Fitting the rear mudguard on my work bike, having finally figured out a way to get it to play nice with the big, fat studded tyres.
  • Putting a GPS mount on my other fixed.

Wash bikes, or ideally, cunningly find some nefarious act of child that can be punished by washing bikes.
Go mad with chain lube
Get a man in to fit new sprocket to other side of fixie as the current gear is too big for winter or counties west of Cambridgeshire. This will probably require a longer chain.
new bar tape on Giant.
Fix slow puncture on hardtail
Replace bar tape with Pink Stuff on summer fixie. Just for a laugh like.

Put new bottom bracket, chainset, rear wheel and chain on the Yates. When I built it up a bit over a year ago I just re-used everything off the Giant OCR and that was all around 6 years old then.

See if the chainset from the Yates will go on the other bike with the S2C hub. This will probably need a new chain-ring, a new bottom bracket, and chain.

Replace the front derailleur cable on the road bike so that it matches the rear one I changed yonks back when the old one frayed. (Preferably before the new rear one wears out).

Clean bikes, sort out the chain on the commuter (the "orange indicator function" kicked in over the xmas hols and it practically siezed... liberal amounts of low tech "good old oil" have been applied, but it needs cleaning/checking/sorting out).

Replace front (poss. rear too) brake cables in the commuter.

Fit a more comfortable saddle to the Dahon.

You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

Wash bikes.

Replace Marathon Winters with regular Marathons on work bike and replace broken link in its chain. If feeling keen, add in-line cable adjusters.

Replace bar tape, brake cables, brake levers, bottle cages and (probably) one caliper on spare fixed.

Replace bars, levers and brake cables on trike.

Clean up all parts for Mercian before frame comes back from respray.

Change tyres on Audax bike before next weekend.

Sell low profile.

I should probably stop before the list gets too long...

buy a chain tensioner or half link for mtb
I've got a couple of 3/32" half-links in the bits box that I have no use for - if you want one, PM me with an address and I'll pop it in the post Monday.

Replace both tyres on the TinOne

Change the fixed MTB to a road bike - thinner tyres, guards, bigger gear, longer cranks.

Un-gum that rear brake before it seizes solid...
Clean everything, absolutely everything...
Defer it all by faffing around with task management software (!)
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Fitting new bar tape means that a bike will get flucked.  So fixie need new rear wheel after getting knocked off.  Refitting the fix mountain bike with a front brake lever.

For the road bike up grade the roadie to full 105 (brakes and derailleurs) and decide if I could fit the ultegra triple and should clean the grit off the brakes.

Assemble the single speed as now I have all the parts.
