No.  I did it last year.  Sounds like it was worse this year. :(
Getting there...

Oh, and Derek (the clown) is a nice guy, but clowns are an odd thing. I've seen him develop brillant rapours with kids - some love clowns, some don't.  I tend towards not, generally.  His wife is genuinely scary though ;). (and hopefully not a member here...)

One point...

Butterfly, Slowcoach and myself rode out to the Minster for the 'Procession'. Off we went, no police escort, breaking into small groups at each set of traffic lights. We soon found ourselves directed off the main roads and onto a network of suburban streets and cycle farcilities, until spat out just by the racecourse entrance. No grand procession, no progress through the city centre, just pushed quietly into a corner so we could avoid upsetting the Real People and Road Tax Payers.

Not impressed.

It's been getting like that for the last three years. The first time, the police apparently withdrew their support at a couple of hour's notice, and the CTC marshalls are of course not empowered to wave the procession through lights, so there was confusion and mayhem, with people expecting the normal routine. Last year was worse, with strict orders to wait at lights. This year, having been up late, and been annoyed in the last two years, I simply didn't bother. I've heard that the committee can't afford the fees for police support. I don't know that the route is intended not to inconvenience other road users, but to provide the easiest way to get a mass of cyclists from A to B when they have to obey road rules.  (Was it the same as last year? over Lendal Bridge, North St, Skeldergate, Terry Avenue riverside path, Bish Road, etc? That does have the smallest possible number of traffic lights to split the ride.)

Of course, broken into groups at lights, the mass is slower, and holds up other users for longer. In the days when we were waved through, we cleared each junction in a couple of minutes, and traffic flowed again.

Just got back, too; well, four hours ago anyway.  Currently recharging myself with slabs of lasagne followed by cake and hot chocolate.  Tony will be relieved to know that my train did eventually arrive, albeit 50 minutes late.  Apparently somewhere around Tamworth the railway had stopped working.

Very nice to meet up with so many from here, faces familiar and new.  I pottered around the trade tent and stuff-for-sale tents and came away with one of the Smart Lunar front lights to keep my older one company.  I thought about buying another pair of SPDs, but decided to wait until I was home to see if I'd won a pair on eBay, which of course ... I hadn't.  I really wanted to like the Rotovelo at the Velovision stand, but while it feels unbreakable in that plastic school chair kind of way, it just looked a bit too Fisher Pricey, compared with the Quest.  I did have a long conversation with Nick Lobnitz, he of the Paper Bicycle.  I rather fancy one of them for next winter.

I left Yawk's glorious summer temperatures behind for a more usual 14C with drizzle.  My woefully unprepared arms and thighs despite being thoroughly sunburned are now temporarily immune to Scottish temperatures.
Just spotted this. I was accosted by a tall girl at the station, whose train was showing itself to be something like half an hour late. Not good. As posted elsewhere, it was in The Great Cesspit that my own journey went nipples skyward.

I've heard that the committee can't afford the fees for police support.

By their own statement The Committee also cannot afford the costs of British Cycling officials in order to promote the grass track racing.

That's two features of the Rally that have dissappeared. :(

On a brighter note....I can literally count on the fingers of one hand the number of slices of cake that made the journey back to joglersville. The yacf reputation for cake consumption is well desreved & in rude health ;D

Was it the 700C wheel or the 26" wheel?
I have been known to borrow the 26" wheel one we have (officially mine so I get it when both boys are too tall.)  Don't think much of the saddle though (nor does younger guy, he keeps eyeing up my big wide gell job.)
