I know how some of you feel - I recently changed work location and the commute by bike was very crappy at first, especially because it seemed to rain for the first two weeks and there were no kit drying facilities where I am now.

The roads are different in style from what I'm used to, I went from commuting into St James's Park via Richmond Park, mostly on busy roads with a fair amount of room - switched now to a rat-run north to south route that still takes me via the park but then takes back roads to Kew Bridge - a lot of the time I'm stuck behind traffic as there isn't room for proper two way traffic, let alone filtering on in or outside traffic.

Probably the only reason I'm cycling every day is that the alternative route via public transport takes anything up to half an hour longer and involves the crappy and uncomfortable 65 bus.

I sympathise.  I rode down way out west a few weeks ago in search of an elusive babyshower.  Some nasty roads.  Although, I think you are right, the unfamiliarity makes it tougher.  I worked in N. Kensington years ago and was fine once I had a few different routes I liked and which kept it from getting boring.
It isn't the best time of year to begin a new commute route either.  Perhaps leave it till one beautiful morning weatherwise, and extend the commute, if you can, to leave out the bigger roads and perhaps squeeze in a bit of riverside to make it quieter and more enjoyable. That's what I do every now and then.  My route is only 5 miles (I could make it three if I wanted to haul the SS up a gert big hill) but when there is a clear sky, beautiful sliver of moon in a sky which promises a lovely sunrise, I'll make it 12,  and include some of my favourite bits of London.
What route are you using?  I don't know where in Chiswick you are and I guess the A4 could be a nasty barrier to building a decent route, but I bet it can be done, even in the badlands of the West.

Hi Jane  :) At the beginning of this spell of rider's block, I started a "what route?" thread on here which produced lots of useful options. I have no excuse really, it's just a mental thing. Many Londonites, perhaps most, have more perilous routes.

Needless to say, I have considered the n+1 solution.

Dr Tewdric prescribes a nice pootle in Monmouthshire involving a Pub lunch so you remember why you like cycling, then a cyclescheme N+1 in the form of a Brompton H3L, which you can ride in civvies for 6 miles with no problem.

Two excellent suggestions. It's just wrong that I don't have a Brompton.

Been there. In spades. I haven't commuted day-in, day-out for years. For me it was a combination of waking up in hospital once and also, simply, being ground down by the constant alertness that a busy urban DC A road commute requires. Too many near misses, nasty sights and altercations. Shell shock.

Please post if you find a way out - I never did. Tried the "going for a ride" lark but, having ridden a bike as transport since the age of 7, never really saw the point.

I found a way out. Counselling.  Helped by my loathing of being restrained from doing what I want.

That's interesting. What sort of counselling and how did you start the process? I don't think there's a category in the Yellow Pages for counsellors specialising in rehabilitation of cyclists mentally traumatised by too many miles on the road!

Seriously interested - Mrs P sort of suggested something similar but I'm afraid I scoffed at the idea, saying I'm sure it would pass soon. That was years ago now :(

One thing you might think about, just for the hell of it, is TfLs free cycle training [url
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/11689.aspx[/url] - I organised it for my daughter and did it myself at the same time (OK, it was Woolly delivering it) and really think it is worth doing for anyone that uses London streets.

^ This. (mind you a cycle trainer I should agree. My patch is Westminster, Southwark and Lambeth, rather than H&F/K&C but I could make an exception one morning!).

I had cycle training when I first started - it was very valuable. (Speshact, I am sure it was you I saw with a 'trainee' coming off Waterloo Bridge yesterday evening while I waited at the cycle lights to get onto the bridge!)

And WW, that will be why I don't bump into you at lunchtimes any more...!

n+1 is a great solution, SP! When I started cycling again recently, a lot of it was due to the novelty of borrowing Rob's Brompton. (If you're going to do n+1 and want anything other than a standard model, do it now - currently 14 week waiting list for custom ones  :( )

Cognitive behavioural therapy provided initially by my employer then after my allotted number of sessions, by the NHS. I was allocated a counsellor who was experienced in working with people who had had traumatic experiences.

Initially after my accident I couldn't even cross the road. Didn't get back on a bike for months.  Couldn't drive for ages and had to have a course of driving lessons in a dual controlled car.

The counselling process was hard work and often very painful. I grew as a human being as a result of it though and don't regret a moment of it.

And, just so as you don't forget, I _think_ that the "roundabout near Barton Truck Stop" evening  might be about my proudest_of_my_mate_LG moment ever.  Probably.

Ha! Got on the bike for a short jolly this evening :) Oddly warm out there. I am really keen to ride to work tomorrow. Kit all laid out. Bike ready. All I need to do is to put that on after my shower instead of the civvies...

Bugger. I was keeping an eye out on the "For Sale" board for a Vigorelli bargain...

(Top man. Go on. Do it, ride that bike)
There are two ways you can get exercise out of a bicycle: you can
"overhaul" it, or you can ride it.  (Jerome K Jerome)

I think you're getting to grips with it there.
It's actually not too bad out there ce soir.
Well done!
Go for it SP!

Did it, finally  :) Not too unpleasant at all.

My Exposure Strada 2 failed* as I wheeled the bike out of my front door. There then followed a 10 minute search for my Hope 1. Briefly, just briefly, there was a "bugger this" moment and the civvies beckoned.

*Unimpressed. I doubt if there are all that many hours on that light. Just before I left home, I saw that I had an email from Lumicycle tempting me with their wares.

That was... rather damp. I'm glad I had a look at the weather forecast. I'd say, on balance, that was enjoyable  :) I really must get a route that doesn't go right through Hammersmith both ways though.

You certainly picked an interesting day for it. I left town around 13:00 and it was just starting to rain. It hasn't stopped yet!

Coming back to chiswick, Hammersmith gyratory is a pain in the arse. If traffic is really grid locked, you are just as quick to dismount and walk over the thing.

Good work though.
Right! What's next?

I think I have finally rediscovered the joys of the bike  :) The weather probably has a lot to do with it. Just back from 3 laps of a dark misty and largely empty Richmond Park.

Wonderful.
Pleased to hear it.
Welcome back.

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking, as I rode around, that so many people are not fortunate enough to be near such a place, and of those that are not far away, many are not (health-wise) able to take it advantage of it.

Steady lappage and a truly relaxing ride is only really possible once the cars are shut out though.

You seriously need to come down for a Monmouthshire lunch pootle.  :-)
