John Wonnacott, another contemporary artist I'd never heard of.  Thank you Twitter.

Quite a confusing site, but if you click on each of the shows it takes you to more paintings.

The Arts Council have announced their latest funding plan. Moving investment out of London to other regions.

I've got the RLPO a short walk from my flat & occasionally go over to the RNCM or Bridgewater for concerts, so don't feel too deprived on the musical front, but it's good to see more money coming to the regions. In a decent world we'd not be cutting London to pay for it though.

https://www.thestage.co.uk/news/breaking-news-arts-council-england-npo-funding-decisions-2023-26

"Leading London-based organisations including the National Theatre, English National Opera, the Royal Opera House and the Donmar Warehouse have received significant cuts in the latest funding round from Arts Council England. The Donmar has been 100% cut, while ENO said it was now looking at creating a base outside of London."

"Liverpool and Merseyside Theatres Trust, which runs the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, has returned to the portfolio after being placed in special measures last time out. It will receive £5,434,008 over the three-year term."

Serial kiddy fiddler Gary Glitter will apparently be out at Christmas.  Probably a bit late to organise a Gang Show tour.  He must have been responsible for more hurried re-masters of compilation albums than anyone else*.

"GLYNDEBOURNE REGRETS TO ANNOUNCE THAT IT WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO TOUR AS PLANNED IN 2023, FOLLOWING A REDUCTION TO ITS ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND (ACE) FUNDING FOR TOURING AND ITS LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT WORK."

I'm not the worlds biggest opera fan but I have been to see Glyndbourne's touring performances in Liverpool for the last 2 years.  It looks like they will be the last.

Welsh National Opera have also cancelled their regular tours to Liverpool & other cities for the same reason.

So much for levelling up.

I sang in Stainer's Crucifixion this afternoon. Definitely a second-rate work, or possibly not that good. It retains its popularity amongst choirs because it was written with amateur choirs in mind, it's in English, and it's much easier than the good stuff like Bach and Handel. But it's a fine example of its genre - Victorian schmaltz. I sang two short solos, one as a High Priest having a moan about blasphemy and the second as a malefactor on an adjacent cross, telling The Lad 'Imself that if he's the Messiah he can save himself and us by using his Magic Powers.

It was great to sing in a concert again - I think this is my first one since December 2019. The choir has done a couple of others, but I've been hors concours for one reason or another. Our next one is on 13th May and is a Good One. Beethoven's C major mass and J. S. Bach's motet Jesu meine Freude.

Edit: it crossed (ha!) my mind that Stainer's Crucifixion satisfies the blood-lust of Christians in spring-time. ;)

Dear Peter,

Thank you so much for taking one the solo passages in the Crucifixion. It was good to be able to rely on your confident singing. Your splendid performance brought out the lovely resonance of your voice and fitted the narrative really effectively.

Again, very many thanks and very best wishes,

Colin
