I wonder how the word is selected each day? If it's a random selection by machine that's one thing, but if it's chosen by human, then there might well be biases, either unconscious or conscious, towards obscure words or letter combinations.
There's a list of possible words embedded in the javascript[1], and some code that picks one at 'random' based on what your computer thinks the date is.

There are about 12,900 words in it...
That's pretty good going... my computer only knows about 6000 5-letter words (assuming non-letter characters like apostrophes aren't allowed).

6138Anyway, the important point is that words are being selected effectively at random, and the word list doesn't look like it's been curated by hand.
