The Professionals on ITV4
« on: 03 July, 2008, 08:04:46 pm »
Unusually I am settling down in front of the telly, and after a brief bout of channel flicking, what do I find just starting on ITV4? The Professionals. Cool. "Bodie! Doyle!"

Does anyone remember the picture of Iranian revolutionaries carrying a sign saying "Down With CI5!"

Course, in the first series, they had BL cars (which changed every other week, cause BL couldn't be @rsed). I seem to remember* Doyle chasing a Rover P5 in an Austin 1100 - good luck to him!

<Edit: I was wrong - the smallest car they used was a Dolly Sprint or a TR7. See here>

* I was only very young at the time, and should probably have been in bed...

I never understood why a programme designed to appeal to 7 year old boys was shown after the watershed. I was too young to see the BL years, but I loved the later ones. Strange, but I don't have an overwhelming sense of nostalgia or cringeworthiness if I watch it now.

It was great, not too violent this week, but fairly un PC towards women!!

Highlight had to be during interrogation:
Thug "I want to see a lawyer"
Bodie "Why? You thinking of making a will?"

It's never been quite the same since "The Bullshitters".

Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

I remember them in the Austin 1100 (or an alegro looking thing anyway).

Bodie loves Boyle and wants to touch his bottom.

Minder is funnier.

Fantastic telly.

BL supplied cars for a while, but only on a short term loan basis. Ford recognised the brand benefits (horrible words!) of the programme and donated the Capri and Escort RS2000 that were used in later episodes and which become inextricably linked to the series.

But don't take our word for it

http://www.youtube.com/v/xT7WwloQSQw&rel=1

"What's CI5?"

"errr Criminal Intelligence errrr Five or something"

Bullshitters was good but in no way came close to parodying the show as well as the show does itself.

Just how gorgeous did Lewis Collins think he was? If he spent as much time fighting crime as he did pouting he could have eradicated crime totally.

Superb Stuff

Regan is asked whether he has a water-tight case against a suspect.

"Weeeell, not stone bonker guv"

He replied.

Me and a mate rewound that bit, Regan definitely says "stone bonker."

WTF?

I googled it and it does seem to be a cockney phrase, Terry Venables used it once, it means "not complete".

Later that night I fell asleep in a beer-related incident and my mate drew in biro the words "stone bonker" on my forehead, took a photo with my phone and changed the contact photo for when he called me to that photo.

The sweeney's doing ninety
'Cos they've got the word to go
They get a gang of villains
In a shed up at heathrow
They're counting out the fivers
When the handcuffs lock again
In and out of wandsworth
With the numbers on their names
It's funny how their missus'
Always look the bleeding same
And meanwhile at the station
There's a couple of likely lads
Who swear like how's your father
And they're very cool for cats
They're cool for cats

I think I have encountered the phrase or saying "stone bonker" uttered by RAF pilots, but which came first I cannot say.
