Does my fork shaft have a removable race?
« on: 24 May, 2020, 03:05:35 pm »
I'm stripping my circa 2007 Dawes Galaxy. The forks and stem are quill not the modern headset. Does this fork have a removable race?

I plan to send it off for a respray.

Many thanks.

Yes. Yes it does. And you really should remove it.
See Mrs Pingu's travails with her respray!

You can quite easily get if off yourself with a screwdriver (not one you’re too fond of though  :)) and a hammer. You’ll be fitting a new one anyway so damage to the race isn’t an issue.

The shaft you refer to is the steerer tube.

Or, how about leaving it on, then, when the respray is done, remove it and replace with new. This avoids the fiddliness associated with masking up that patch prior to the respray.

FWIW you can often get a snug-fitting crown race to start moving using a Stanley knife blade as a wedge (not a lever). Just tap one in from each side and the race will usually start to move. Once the race has started to move you can get something thicker in there and perhaps lever it up instead.

It doesn't look badly worn to me, so it ought to be possible to re-use it. If the frame is going to be shot-blasted the race will most likely be damaged by the shot blasting as well as overpainted etc

cheers

Thanks all. My local bike mechanic is going to remove the race, BB and headset races on Weds. I can't travel to the resprayers anyway, as I'm in Scotland and they are 30 miles away.

Cheers

I would be worried about ruining the new paintwork while trying to remove the old race.

You can get crown race removers, but I have one and never use it.  Rest the fork upside down on a block of wood to protect the steerer.  Give the crown race light taps around its circumference with a hammer and flat punch (or a screwdriver) until it pops off.

This won't work on forks where the bottom of the race is inaccessible but it works on most steel forks.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Yes this method worked for me. A few taps and it slid off.
