Title: Strange Combinations of Food that Actually Don't Taste Too Bad
Post by: agagisgroovy on 29 March, 2008, 03:18:52 pm
My mum bought some Mars bars, but they were big ones so I had to cut them in half. Only after I had cut them did I realize that the knife was covered in ... lemon curd?  ;D

Sweet & Sour works well in sorbet, Chinese food, pickled herrings, salads and duck a l'orange.

Maybe it works almost everywhere...

Homemade pasta sauce with pineapple chunks. Lovely. Honestly.

Black tea with apple juice (discovered when I had run out of milk...)

We went on a walking hol a few years ago and each day we were issued with lovely home-made packed lunches by the host & hostess. The first day's lunch included a sort of savoury flan with a very interesting combination of tastes. We were told in advance that there would be a prize for anyone who could identify the two strongest flavours.

It turned out to be mackerel and banana. It was really lovely!

Cheese and fruitcake is quite popular in Mrs. Wow's neck of the woods.

It is here too  :)

Any recommendations as to the type of cheese and flavour of jam Mrs P?

I've got cheddar and blueberry, which doesn't sound promising...

I have been subjected to baked beans and banana by a friend; also tuna, pasta, and banana. He has a thing about bananas.

I too was going to say peanut butter and banana, sandwich wise that is. I have hazy memories from my CND/Long hair/veggie days that peanut butter and Branston pickle was a favourite too. But I was a bit weird then.

In the pub last night, we were eating various odds and sods off of the menu, meatballs, nachos with cheese, nibbles type stuff, and one of the things that someone ordered was Chicken with Chocolate and Chili Sauce... :o

It was ... odd ... I can't say it seemed like a particularly good idea, and wasn't necessarily awful either, just didn't seem to do anything for me.

Christmas cake and Lancashire cheese was the order of the day when I was growing up in that county.  Sweet and savoury is a world wide combination.

The jars used by the makers of Bisto Best gravy powder and of Kenco instant coffee can look very similar to a bleary-eyed early morning caffeine seeker.  It's a mistake I don't intend making again.

Chips with apple sauce.  The only condiment for chips, IMO, but you can't usually get apple sauce at the chippie so I make do with ketchup or mayo.

Chilli and Chocolate's, Strawberries and Balsamic is a treat, Beer and chocolate also works.

Couple of weeks back I was working on a Thai seasoning whilst my colleague was working on Ice-cream...combo-time!  Try something like Schwartz 7 Thai spices for stir-frying with plain ice-cream...It's a taste sensation!

If only...
Couple of days later I met a flavourist at an ingredients 'do' and the company she worked for had developed a Thai flavour specifically for Ice-cream that they were keen to promote (I'm not buying), so it's not even an original idea.  :'(

Ho hum, back to the corporate chain-gang until I accidentally discover  the idea to propel me to fame and fortune...
Sorry about the fiver  ;D

Chicken in mole sauce is a well know Mexican dish.  I had it in California and seemed to remember it being delicious.  But I was drunk and ravenous.  ;)

I once put coriander in an apple cake instead of cinnamon.  It worked, but I haven't done it again.  Cinnamon works better!

I think I may be the only Lancastrian living who doesn't like cheese with Christmas cake.  I much prefer brandy butter.  Yum.

Go to McDo's...
Large order of chips & a vanilla milk shake..
Dips the chips in the shake and eat  :)

If it's McD's, the fries probably contain a higher percentage of sugar than the shake...

Fruit salad with lime or lemon juice and chili sauce or ground dried chili. Yum! This is very commonplace in Mexico, so I can't claim to have invented it. Most people in this country seem to go "urgh!" at the suggestion but it's really very tasty.

Also, on a similar theme, cold lager with chili sauce, worcestershire sauce* and lime juice in a salt-rimmed glass. This is known as a "michelada". Delicious and refreshing on a hot day.

* known as salsa Ingles ("English sauce") in Mexico

Most of the root beer you find over here tastes like very sweet mouthwash. Perhaps there's better stuff, but I'm not a huge fan either.

Was it Kipling who said something or other about eggs without salt and pepper being like "a kiss without a moustache" ?

Or have I got that seriously wrong. I mean, what on earth does that say about dear old Rudyard?

edit: mind you, he seemed to have a lot of respect for those Patan types, and we all know what they get up to...

When Little Cudzo was something like 4 months old and just starting to eat solids, I was feeding him a banana one day when he started gesturing excitedly at something green on the table. It was dill, so I gave him some and he wanted more. He ate alternate mouthfuls of banana and dill. I tried it too and it's surprisingly good.

Strange combinations often form the basis of some well accepted pairings. Think of the oiliness of mackerel balanced with the acidity of gooseberries. Conversely the same fish where the oily richness is built upon, with a stuffing of nuts and spices(Turkey).

The best and most timeless oddities have, however, an elegance and logic that means their status almost seems inevitable. A useful principal to remember.

I love chocolate with chilli

Mole (sauce) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mol%C3%A9#Mole_poblano)

The jars used by the makers of Bisto Best gravy powder and of Kenco instant coffee can look very similar to a bleary-eyed early morning caffeine seeker.  It's a mistake I don't intend making again.

My wife was once making a pumpkin pie, and shook in a good strong measure of powdered ginger from an unmarked jar in the spice cabinet. When we tasted the pie, it tasted very wrong. But our dinner guest loved it, and had more than one slice.

It wasn't until some time later that I held out an unmarked jar, asked my wife "is this the ginger you used?" (it was), and told her that it was in fact garlic powder.

A lot of people still don't believe that  ham-and-pineapple pizzas are good.

I'm not a huge fan of the brown stuff (Mole Poblano - find it a bit sickly) but green Mole is the shiznitz. Needs to be eaten with proper fresh corn tortillas  Having said that, I do like the Mexican drinking chocolate that comes in a round shape divided into segments.

Had this one yesterday at a restaurant that serves an Indian interpretation of Italian food.

Garlic bread, where the "bread" element was actually a currant bun.

The garlic seemed a bit missing too.

My son seemed to think it was the highlight of the meal!

One thing I remember making which tasted disgusting was a 3 bean chilli (in my veggie days), after placing all the ingredients in the chili, I tasted it to find that it was lacking a certain something, so I metally ran through the ingredients I had put in the pot.  I eventually came to the conclusion I had missed out the chili, so reached into the spice cupboard, brought out a pot with a label saying chili powder on it, and placed a good tablespoon of said powder in the pot.

It started smelling WRONG, I tasted it and found it to be foul.  I check the pot and found that I had used the pot labeled chili to store a bag of ground cloves I had bought a week early to add to the cider that was fermetning away in the corner....
