Lions tour 2017

Gatland has announced his squad. Too many Welshmen? Only two Scots?

Looks like a strong squad, perhaps just as interesting in some of the exclusions as those selected.

I can't believe that Joe Launchbury hasn't made the squad. He would have been first on my list.

There's a lot of very close decisions between those selected and those not.

I'm gonna limp to the pub and drink 'til the rest of me is as numb as my arse.

It's the scoreboard that counts.
It is simpler than it looks.

It is. Sounded like hard work (I dipped in and out of the Graun's "live" feed).

Yes, not an easy match, to many penalties given away. Deserved red card, silly stuff from Vinupola.

Apparently, SBW is first All Black to be sent off in a test since 1967.

I recall Colin Meades being sent off against the Barbarians in (I think) the late 1960s but that wouldn't have been classed as a test match, I wouldn't have thought.

Correction: that was the incident I was thinking of, but  google tells me it was against Scotland. ISTR that he committed a late tackle on the Scots full-back, a guy called Wilson.

Further correction: I think the late tackle I recall was in the Barbarians' game but didn't result in a sending off but the Scots incident was simply kicking a player who had already gathered the ball. It came as no surprise to me that Meads was very influential in the early coaching of one Martin Johnson.

I was staggered to hear that, and can only conclude that it's like referees awarding penalties against Manchester United.

I think you may be right.  Silly Bill Williams plays like that ALL THE TIME.  He's a disgrace.  It's also disappointing to see how high profile Duncan McRae has become ten years after his cowardly assault on Ronan O'Gara.

In the video I linked to Bill McLaren reckoned that Colin Meads' sending off was the first for an All Black since Twickenham 1924. So they are running at just over 2 a century.

16 years ago! I was actually at the SFS for that game. Watching it back on the big screen wasn't pleasant...

Watched it in a field in Oxfordshire.

That was quite a match and quite a result.
