Pencil in the Axe and Compasses for 27th ...so, as just-about-as-far-east-as-you-can-go-on-a-Wednesday-evening-until-you-run-out-of-Essex last week, way out west next, this week somewhere north/south/in the middle? We still haven't quite made it over the border yet and the nights will be drawing in soon... :demon:

I am happy with a longer ride this week and next but I will defer to those who rode Hereward (and extra bits in Jiber's case) as to how far they want to go.

We could do a [insert distance of your choice here] ride to our spiritual home for a central Essex location.  I need a chat with Joss to confirm using the Compasses as a checkpoint on the 6th August, but doesn't have to be this Wednesday if we want to go foreign.

I'm relatively easy for this Wednesday, my meeting in London has been cancelled on Wed and my Bristol one on Thursday I don't have to be at... not tested the legs yet though!

I confirmed The Spiritual Home hadn't moved yesterday with a car assisted visit plus a QA check on 2 pints of beer, which it passed also.... so happy to pop their this week.....

I reckon the nearest place to Witham over the border in the Land of the Rising Sun is either Bures or Nayland - I'd recommend the Anchor in the latter, a lovely old pub and right by the river Stour. I make it around 25 miles if you take the scenic route via Silver End, Coggeshall, Gt Tey, Wakes Colne and Bures. A more direct route home is about 5 miles less: Lt Horkesley, W Bergholt, Aldham, Marks Tey and the A12 cyclepath, or via Coggeshall].

I might manage to meet you all somewhere en-route...

Ack - my meeting in London is now back on, but hopefully be out of there by 16:30...

We still Compasses or The Anchor tomorrow night, I'm confused...  ???

Waiting to see who else is interested in the Nayland Anchor...? I'm ok with the Compasses, but we have an unfulfilled ambition to go forrin here.

 About 30 miles each way for me; I'll try and leave at 19:00 to get there for 21:00. See y'all there...

I might pop by the Beehive in Great Horkesly for a quick pint....I've ridden past it several times in the morning and it is one of those pubs I just want to try. Anyone else want to meet there before dropping down to Nayland?

Any ideas on Route for tonight? It is likely I will be looking for an intercept.

I was going to have a go with rideWithGPS over lunchtime if no-one else had done so by then.

Well, that's all very well if you want to start and finish in West Mersea  :demon:

I'll let Oaky propose a Witham start/finish route, not sure about being able to participate at this point in time though.  Expect to see me at the roundabout if you see me  :-\

The Beehive at 30.4km less than 3 km from the Anchor.....Excellent!

We could aim for a Beehive intercept.  Not sure what the ETA would be - probably 8.45 based on a 7.30 departure.

The Witham lot can create their own fun elsewhere.

how about we aim for the intercept by the intersection where the NCN heads straight through near Birch? 12k in for you so about 8pm?

If you mean the turn into Birch Grove where NCN veers off into the COR section then 8pm sounds about right.

I will probably be on gears tonight but don't let that be an excuse to try and rip my legs off again  :o

That's where I mean!

;D OK then...just kidding....I'm still a bit tender from the weekend so shall be in recovery....although I do still need to try our that 16t Cog to see what 78" feels like and this might actually be an ideal test route.

If you are riding 47x16 then I suppose I ought to ride 46x16 so we can suffer together.

Bloody peer pressure  ;D

Looking at the calculator:

46x16 on 28s is 76.96 and 47x16 on 28s is 78.64.  Thankfully it's not a hilly route.

How about this route from Witham

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/15231527

(It originally went past the end of chief's drive, but I tweaked it to overlap more with ted's approach.)

I haven't checked it for any blatant rideWithGPS-isms though, so it might be routing down some gravel track at some point.

Exactly. I think the biggest 'hill' is the one up to West Bergholt and I went up that with the bike fully loaded for the tour on 47x18 so should be fine in summer mode!

So technically we could all meet at the Beehive so we all cross the border together  ;D
