Great pic.   :)

We've had about 0.25 inches of snow in this part of Oxfordshire...  Though I'm not really complaining yet.    ;)

Brighton?  But that's down in the Tropics, surely?  Where are the people sunbathing on the beach, buying ice creams and paddling in the waves to cool off?

This bus has stopped at the top and wont go down. Theres ice under this layer of snow.
This bus is on its way up. It cant really go anywhere and its wheels are spinning and its going no where fast. After this picture i go out and get the bus up using abit of sand. The bus gets up the road and on its way. Sadly the bus that was at the top of the road couldnt turn around and had to sit and wait it all out.
Hopefully cars will get grip before coming too close to my car, touch wood no car will hit it. Also the sand used to get the bus up  Cant really put much down but it does help cars get abit more grip

Hartside Cumbria, 5.15 pm 4th Dec.

We had a nice day out skiing at Yad Moss, busy with queues, and a late start due to the tardy arrival of the gritting lorry.
About 200 people on the slope. We met our mate Guido the German maths teacher, made some new Lithuanian friends, and I met what is probably the first skier from the island of  Dominica to sample an English Snowslope. We followed the first gritter to open Hartside to 2 wheel drive traffic after the recent falls.

I can't embed them at the moment, but there are some wintry pics of the Environment Centre I work at here, taken by Ivana who runs the place.

St Nicholas Fields: St Nicks Winter Wonderland Gallery (http://www.stnicksfields.org.uk/viewgallery.php?id=16)

I'm in there, on the trike, wearing the red hat, looking over my shoulder, riding into 6" deep snow...  You can just see the little scoops either side of the front tyre track, where the pedals went below snow level....

Post by: CrinklyLion on 08 December, 2010, 01:56:06 am
I think that the 6th one in that gallery (lime trees view) is just round the corner from the spot where CrinklyCub the younger used to like to go to sleep in his pushchair when he was a wee'un and having a grumpy day.  We'd walk round to there, I'd sit on a big lump of rock and read a book whilst rocking the buggy with the other hand and he would look at the trees until he fell asleep.  And yes, I have done it a few times in weather that resembles that photo!

From below Winter Hill in Lancashire at about 1,000 feet  looking towards the Lake District, probably about 60 miles visibilty. Very little snow, even that on the distant fells is mainly a dusting. The yellow haze will be diesel particulates.

We got quite a bit of snow, the sheep beyond our garden look mighty pissed off, especially the Rams, who are trailing their nadgers through the white stuff.

That takes me back.

I went there with our fell walking club from college in the 1970s. It was snowing then - about waist deep at times. We intended to get to the top but made the mistake of stopping for lunch (we'd taken packed lunch with us). We were so frozen after a few minutes stationary that we just went straight back down to the valley.

In contrast to Wowbagger, I walked the three peaks in 10.5 hours on what was the hottest July day about 15 years ago. I remember drinking 5 litres of water and not peeing all day. After about 20 miles I was done for, but a short nap in some shade and a pack of salty cheesy biscuits worked wonders and my energy was restored for the final few miles.

Crikey thats going some ,shortest route is about 26 miles and on some fairly rough terrain .It tookme 18 years to do the 3 peaks ,

Interesting that Dez's youtube video has many examples of the same phenomenon in the "related" column!

The only think I can't understand about it is how does the ice break free into an almost perfect disk? The only thing I can think of is the depression in the centre of a whirlpool coupled with faster flowing water at the outer edge would wear away/melt the ice at the outer edge much faster than at the centre. Interesting.

This is the deposition from an avalanche that ran a few miles from my house on Saturday afternoon, 7 May. For those of you who know Colorado, this happened next to Interstate 70, between Frisco and Copper Mountain ski area. The flat topped mound of snow on the right side of the second picture is the bicycle path from Frisco to Copper Mountain Ski Area and onward to Vail Pass. It might be a while before it's rideable this year...

This area is fairly deep in the canyon and west facing, so it gets very little sun all winter long, so very little of this winter's snowfall had melted. We had a series of heavy, wet snowstorms at the end of April to pile on a last good load of snow, then things finally warmed up a few days before this happened. A few days of warm temperature to melt the snow and lubricate the ground underneath the snow, some strong sun all day Saturday that finally loosened up the snow, and here's the result.

I went to Keystone for a conference years ago. I took a mountain bike with me and after 3 days acclimatising over the conference I spent 10 days exploring the area, based in a motel in Frisco. I'd get a stack of pancakes with blueberries and head off for most of the day. I had one epic day when I went over one of the highest passes in the area, Looking down on Breckenridge and just mountaintops everywhere in the distance. There were large pockets of snow there, in August.

That was a great couple of weeks - thanks for reminding me!

Cool (no pun intended).

Due to friction, the water nearer the banks moves slower than the water in the middle of the stream, so anything in a stream of water will tend to rotate as the bit near the middle of the stream is pushed faster than the stuff nearer the bank.

There's some free OU videos available on iTunes regarding grad, div and curl about this (part of the MST209 course I did last year): http://itunes.apple.com/jm/itunes-u/grad-div-curl-for-ipod-iphone/id380228199

No idea how they form in the first place though. There are lots of other examples in the 'related videos' links on the right of your video, so it's not just a one-off and looks like an entirely natural phenomenon.
