I've just seen the route for this year's Giro and I can only surmise that the organisers chose it on the basis of having trawled through our holiday photo albums for the past 10 years or so.
There's the start in Lido di Venezio which heads off to Trieste and then back to Mayrhofen and Innsbruck via Bergamo and Brixen (Summer 2002), Cuneo to Pinerolo via the Izoard (the 'orrible way too) (Summer 2007), Chieti to Blockhaus (we stayed about 30 mins from the Blockhaus), Sulmona to Benevento, Avellino to Vesuvius (we stayed at Avellino) (all Summer 2005).
The upshot of this is that I shall be glued to the TV everyday going "been there, done that!" and generally wondering why the hell we're not going to Italy this year and getting very little work done.
