Author Topic: Recommend me a front light for OAB (One Armed Bandit) light mount  (Read 2194 times)

Hi - after getting fed up with both the foot flash and puny output from the only battery -powered front light I own (my other "normal" bikes with lights use dynamos, except my road bike), I've now ordered a OAB (One Armed Bandit) light mount for my Schlitter Freestyle and now want to purchase a decent light to mount on it. I want it to be bright enough to use on unlit stretches of road, but won't be using it offroad at all.  I want something that has a secure mount and that isn't too heavy, as I otherwise I think the light might bounce up and down on the end of the OAB mount...

Was considering possible either a 50 lux B&M IXON Core, though that may not be bright enough, or else the new 100 lux B&M IXON  Rock, as they focus the light on the road, rather than at cars, but am open to other suggestions. I don't need a gazillion lumens offroad light and would prefer something rechargeable and with a simple interface (not 18 different modes...). Would like a battery life of at least 1.5 hours on full beam.

Budget is up to about £100-ish. Thanks!

If it’s on lit streets then 50 lux would be fine , for dark lanes I’d go 70 lux and up. This one sits at 80 lux and gives 5 hours off AA. The one you linked only gives 2.5 hours at 100 lux.  So depends how long you intend to be out riding at night  I suppose.

Yes, but I think that light is considerably larger and heavier, which might not be so great with the mount

The Ixon IQ is quite a heavy beast but, while mine bounced and wobbled around on a Minoura Spacegrip, it was fine on a One Arm Bandit which is a much more solid, substantial mount. I’ve switched to a dynamo hub now so have a Luxos on there and that’s been fine too.

There is a Fenix front light BC25R that has an innovative cut off facula line on the light to avoid blinding drivers and ranges of power up to 600 lumens. It's also rechargeable so when you are old and falling apart you can recharge from your 'leccy motor battery  :)

Turbo mode about same brightness as best Dynamo lights and last 2 hours. In high mode it’s below the cheaper Dynamo lights but will last 7 hours.  Unusual for them to list lux ratings. So fine for most riding requirements

For a recumbent I’d consider something like this one which has a wireless remote for changing through lighting modes.

Thanks, sounds like a good idea to have a remote

Is this the same, but rechargeable?

Although the LEDs are different and it's max 1800 lumens burst (1000 lumens high) vs  2200 lumens burst (1500 lumens high), so not quite as bright. Also, I guess in some ways the  regular BC30 V2 is more flexible, as you can easily replace the 18650 batteries if they wear out, and on epic nightime rides (or touring) you could take a spare set. I do have a charger that will work with 18650 batteries already, so maybe that's the best option

If you phone the Fenix chap down South (Portsmouth?) he is very helpful. I found the number on the internet.
