A Cycling Forum that never took off.
« on: 20 June, 2008, 07:55:40 am »
I suppose lots of people start forums that never succeed.
Here's a cycling related one.

I guess we're just not ready for such specialist niches.  ;D
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Anything saying it is hosted "for free" deserves to die - slowly and painfully.

Anyone up for a Flashmob of his site?

We all register, and post one message, then un-register  ;D

It seems to be just one guy - Martin Wilson.

"Institute of Cheap Bikes" sounds to me rather like the National Apathy League.

I'm tempted to register and demand a board for Tensor, which was a cheapo bike importer based in Darlington.  They were so crap that one BMX they sold snapped at the fork crown when you took it down a steep drop-off, such as a kerb.

I'm sure they had at least one bike in that colour scheme ;D

HEY! My first drop handle-barred bike was a Tensor, bought it from Arthur Caygills in Richmond.

It was a great bike (rose tinted specs and all) until:
1) the seat stay parted company with the seat tube (fixed by my dad)
2) I was hit by a motorbike that was going way too fast and the RHS chain stay got mangled....

I was in my early to mid teens at the time

Cycle Chat was empty for ages. They even had a helmet thread going that only attracted about three replies. God knows what happened to the handful of original members.

Tensor! I had one of theirs when I was a kid (a 5-speed "racer". I think it was called a "Montana"). Magic it was, did my first long-ish rides on that. Sorry to report that I haven't got a spectacular failure story.

How did it take off?  Was it used as a C+ lifeboat, like ACF?

My first fixed wheel was a skip rescued Tensor.

It was fun wondering what would go wrong next. In the end rust started to eat the frame (I'd stripped it and resprayed it).

There are indeed a quite a number of forums, I personally view two on a regular basis and a couple of others less frequently. For sure some are set up differently than others in terms of layout which can make a difference to some, but as far as I am concerned it is the people that make a forum what it is and by that I don't mean how visit or by how many post; size as some say isn't everything.

Yacf may be the most recent and it may not be the biggest but as far as I am concerned it is one of my personal favourites

I know of a cycling forum that took off very successfully, flew quite well for a couple of years, and is now about to crash very heavily due to pilot error.   :-\

Luckily most of the passengers seem to have escaped by parachute!  ;)

Hmmm.... just seven* posts in 24 hours.  Just seven.  Great shame, to see something once so great and vibrant, sink so low.  :-\

*seven in the 'public' area that is.
