bear attack during MTB race

Obviously we don't have bears in UK, but squirrels can be rather vicious.

Good grief. They just can't help themselves, can they? ::-)

When emergency services rang back, a fellow cyclist heard the call and discovered the girl lying near the track with wounds to her head, neck, torso and legs.

A bike helmet she was wearing may have protected her from even more severe injuries

:) Don't you know that if she hadn't have been wearing a helmet the bear would have bitten her leg off? sheesh....

And I don't agree, I never ever ran into a deer whilst riding XC, but on road, well that's a different matter....

Someone in the States once told me that, in case of bear attack, you should fend off the beast by holding up your bike and jabbing the chainring into its face.

My riposte?  Ride in an area not frequented by bears.

When I was a kid, you could summon up the bears by treading on the cracks in the pavement...or so I was told...
