I got in to work on Monday having been out on Thurs & Fri to find that 1/4 of my birthday cake was uneaten and had gone mouldy.
Ingrates.
That's the last time I'll take an entire cake into that office. At least I know when the cake goes to Pingu's work the tin will come back empty the same day!

Inform you colleagues that they are not going to get cake ever again due to the in ability to consume it. There are starving cyclist that cycle miles just for cake.

I put a 'sorry no trick or treat' sign up. I'm not sure if it worked as the door bell rang several times - although I think that was because a neighbour's is compatible. It certainly doesn't generally respond to our button.

I have fettled the Cubs' room, and done all bar one load of the laundry with assorted bedding and towels currently drying on radiators ready for tomorrow, and folded and put away the laundry mountain.  Next... my room.  Blimey, housework is dull.

There seems to be some unwritten rule round here - no pumpkin in the window/on display = no trick or treaters.

Not sure if it's a universal thing but it seems to do the trick.

One year, #2 son and I retired to the back of the house and turned off all lights in the front.  But then I found that I needed to nip over the road for fags.
When I got back I realised I'd not got my keys on me
So I rang the door bell.
Nothing
I rang again.
Still nothing.

I realised what was happening.  Son didn't know I'd gone out and was just ignoring the door bell.

Much long and repeated door bell ringing.
Still nothing.

Lean on bell until son appears looking quite worried.

My trick when in Birmingham was to bake a big chocolate cake. The kids got something their mums had to let them eat that night, mum got to take the sweets away for another day, and I generally had 3/4 of a cake left after the few kids called by. 

As to right now, I am on overtime! restructuring a test report writen by another office as a stream of conscious and trying to remove certain key words the client does not want to see used.

That seemed to be the deal down my way too. I was outside swearing at fettling the car and heard one group of youngsters go past "Not that one, there's no pumpkin".  There was actually, they just didn't see it.  Went out a bit later, so left a bowl of sweetage on the door step, which was satisfyingly emptier when I got back.
