The "nutty's Slimed Bottom" Thread
« on: 09 September, 2009, 11:57:24 pm »
The purpose of this thread is to collect the experiences of those who have fallen foul of nuttycyclist's slimed bottom.  For reference - it's here

I'll start with two:-

1. mark_oakden fell foul on 26/08/09 losing his wedding ring in the process.  (Happy ending - we found it the next day and the only ill-effect was actually an orange sized swelling in my shorts for a few days afterwards) On my hip you smutty b*st*rds!!

2. Oscar's Dad set out tonight (9/9/9  :demon:) to show nutty's slimed bottom a thing or two, while I watched from the footbridge.  He did too... his knee and the famous LUGGAGE (which has, apparently been up some wee hill in France).  I'll let him elaborate himself.

Well I think I'd be safe over Nutty's slimed bottom with my extra wheel... although I could do a very exciting tailskid.

Careful  ;)   That's what I used to say about my bent, until February when riding it sideways on ice I managed to roll it.

I fear the danger here, on a recumbent trike, would be bottom to Bottom contact - resulting in dampness.

Yes, I think that would result in Helen's wet bottom - unless she put her trice in a dinghy.

It was funny!

Expecting trouble I had unclipped both feet and set off at a moderate pace.  Just before I entered the water I asked Mark O what line he took that resulted in his swim.  He informed me it was the line I was taking  ;D

I nearly made it across when the front wheel caught one of the joins between the concrete slabs that make up the ford's floor and over we went.  I was going slowly so only got my knee, glove and bag wet - no harm done.

This is my third time across the ford, the first two crossings went without incident.  However, the previous two were on the tandem shod with 700x35c Marathon XR boots so I think tyre choice is critical to safely navigating Nounsley ford.

It's not too bad - as long as you don't feed it after midnight.

You may have something there...  I've been through it many times , but only splashed down once.  The splashdown was on 700x25c Vittoria Zaffiros.  Some proportion of the others were on those also, but many were on 700x38c Specialized Nimbus.

<Heads off to check statistics...>

EDIT: stats have been checked, and actually only 3 of the successful crossings were on the wider tyre, the rest (~12 crossings) were on the narrow.  Most of the successful ones were in winter though (less weed/slime?).  The unsuccessful crossing was the only one in the direction towards Nounsley.

I will spare his blushes, but a certain gent of this parish dropped his singlespeed mtb so many times on the first Pompey Beer Monster that he cracked his coccyx. His memorable questions the next day were "Why does my arse hurt? What gay bar?"

I have only ridden into that ford once.

100% of my falls were in winter (there was frost on the fields and I had a choice of backtracking 35 miles or continuing 40 miles - I finished the ride)

The weed was really bad.  The water was pushing me sideways well before I fell.

I was heading south.

I have traversed Nutty's Slimed Bottom.

I did not fall in the water. Instead I trackstanded (trackstood??) for about two minutes.

I did not lose my wedding ring or any other important items of jewellery.

Not great since it was done on my phone's camera which doesn't deal well with darkness, but here you are:-

I have traversed Nutty's Slimed Bottom.
I didn't want to know that. :(

I often go through on my early morning rides, no trouble this morning. I've also been through it on the tandem with Micro on the back. Mini has ridden her Islabike through it and back.
I fell in once and lost my computer.
Can anyone beat 100 crossings with a 1% failure rate?

So's my chain, as it happens, but that's probably a trifle tricky to see in that photo (particularly as part of it is underwater).

Not me.  Looking at my logs, I've got about 25 crossings with 1 failure (failure rate of 4%).

Firstly, I wish to claim another successful fording of Nutty's dubious bottom.  Wednesday evening saw me crossing without incident.  A few moments later Auntie Helen crossed with equal success.  Mr Oakden used the foot bridge - utter fairy!

Secondly, those of you that aren't local might care to know what Nutty's slimed bottom actually looks like.  Thus far we have only had a snap of a trike parked in it during the hours of darkness.

Here we have The Current Mrs R fearlessly crossing on the return leg of our first cycling camping trip (a S24O no less  ) ...

And then shot from the other side we have myself and Twinkle Toes crossing aboard Tina the Tandem (on the same trip) ...

Despite it's fearsome reputation it is quite a pretty ford.
