Due to technical reasons (the vagaries of .php being upgraded and the homespun nature of the blog software) my blog of our LEJoG has been offline for some months.  I am relieved to say that it is now back, thanks to Dez sitting down and having a think for half-an-hour or so.

I'd forgotten about your epic LEJoG and Rohloff HubGate!  How did it end?  Have Rohloff ever sorted out the fatal flaw?

Our current incarnation has done lots of miles without problem. I've never had this problem in 39000 miles on my solo machine.

I made a suggestion to Robin Thorn when we attended the Cycle Show quite a few years ago about the lacing of the hubs. He pooh-poohed it at the time, but the third occasion that they fixed our back wheel they had incorporated my suggestion and, for good measure, added a reinforcing ring around the hub flange.

The above image is from the official Rohloff handbook for lacing Rohloff hubs. Because of the large hub diameter, combined with Thorn's preference for 26" wheels, you can only lace the wheels 2-cross. That photo shows the bolt and the thick lump of aluminium which the bolt screws into. That recommended lacing method puts all the pressure from adjacent spokes onto the thin bit of CNC-machined flange and it looked to me as though that was the fatal weakness in the hubs. If the two adjacent spoked cross immediately above the bolt, a much thicker lump of hub shell is taking the strain of the spoke, and, of course, the mass of the rider(s). That was what Thorn did on the third occasion that we sent our wheel back to them and it seems to have worked.

The A Roads Thread had me thinking about whether I'd ever ridden on any roads in the range A31-A40 (I have, but not many) and when I came to research the A36 it reminded me of this: https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=32300.0

It crossed my mind that I haven't organised anything quite like this for a Very Long Time and I wondered if there would be any takers for a rerun?

Bear in mind that the solstice this year is a Wednesday and although that doesn't matter a scrap to a pensioner like me, it probably would for the "economically active" forummers...

Of course the Dunwich Dynamo is also on 1st July and that's only 11 days later. Two night rides in quick succession would be an enormous effort.

Move the Solstice Warty Rerun to the weekend before?

I've been hunting through different threads for a while and found this. Very pleasurable reading! We should do this sort of thing more often. I think that bloody pandemic has a lot to answer for.

This made me LOL, particularly the photos of Basil's phallus.
