Possible N+1 and tyre sizes
« on: 14 June, 2023, 07:50:26 am »
I’m possibly thinking of N+1, which might develop into N-1. ‘Hilda does all the stuff I want really, but the suspension losses and weight are well documented.
I’ve seen a couple of ‘fast ‘ looking ‘bents on the ‘bay’ , but see they run 650c x 23 tyres, with no apparent room for mudguards.  Our roads are indeed third world quality, and I think 23 mm might be pushing the boundaries some what.  Is 650c an odd size, ie supply of new tyres, are they being phased out? Anyone have real world experience of riding pot holed roads with 23 on a bent?
Maybe a Giro 26, ( I’m 6’2”) ,   I also quite fancy Superman bars, but the Giro is still a bit ‘weighty matey’.
I’d like something that is
fast on the track ( faster than ‘Hilda)
Manageable in traffic
Not Sat on the floor
2 wheels ( possibly of similar size)
Some luggage capacity
A decent amount of adjustment on seat,I don’t actually want to be lying down
Fit decent size tyres Say 650b 42 for comfort, and mudguards.
Reasonable weight
A piggy bank
A hammer
Some luck.

Thing is, I’ve seen a ‘bent that really catches my eye, or a picture of it, and it’s like a Streetmachine, no suspension, SWB , but longer wheel base and  26” wheels. Pretty sure I read it was a home build, but it does look excellent. Don’t suppose there are any recumbent frame builders in this country are there? I think this bike was in Eastern Europe.

There are buggerall options for 650C tyres and all are narrow. Previously there occasionally were 650x28C tyres but they were discontinued years ago.

If the recumbents are disc-braked, you can swap to another rim size.

absolutely this, I've just gone from 700 x 28c at 6-7 bar, to 650b x 38 at 4 bar and can probably lower that to between 3 and 3.5, massive difference on an unsuspended bent

I would have thought performer highracer would be the thing you are after.

yup, that's what i figured, trouble is, a bike built around 650c x 23, wont have a lot of room for much else in there.

650C is 571 in size, so 559 should allow for an extra 5mm in the tyre (if it takes disks).
Maybe.
...
Though as a recumbent won't worry about BB height, you could even consider 24".

I was going to quibble this^, but a quick look online on the schwalbe site suggests you are correct.  There used to be more choice as it's a in-between kids size - I remember seeing Kojaks in that size, but apparently no longer.

24" could mean 540/541 (interchangeable) or 507. 507 tend towards MTB style, 540/541 towards road. Wheelchairs often use 540/541, so there are some super-skinny tyres.

I would move to road-style 559, if practical.

Or 520, (formerly?) used on road bikes aimed at petite folks.

True but they are as rare and as skinny as 650C (571) is now.

Don’t suppose there are any recumbent frame builders in this country are there?

[Assuming the confidence of the late Mike Burrows for a brief moment]

Yes, me.  O:-)

[reverting back to normal self]

But I wouldn't let anybody go near any of my bikes...for your sake :D

I was just reading your thread from a few months ago. I can offer little in the way of an opinion about commercially produced recumbents, but I've recently met chap on a couple of PBP qualifiers who goes by the name 'Rab' [don't think he posts here]. He rides a Pelso Brevet, and does so at a very decent pace too [we don't talk for long....he's up and away]. Of course, it's about the engine that sits on the thing. One has to be careful about putting too much expectation into the performance of the bike, but given a half decent machine in the hands of a rider who is prepared to put some work in, then these things are perfectly capable of decent output.

Just looking at the list of criteria in your initial post you mention:
1. Fast on the track
2. Some luggage capacity

It's not that these things are mutually exclusive, can you have a fast bike that take luggage? Of course you can, but there is a clash of interests - to an extent.
How fast is 'fast' and how much luggage is 'some' and for what purpose?
[edit: an integrated tailbox offering some aero capability might be an option of course].

You've probably got to decide what is the most important feature you want from another bike - and then be prepared to accept that satisfying all other criteria may not be possible to the degree you'd like.

I'm in a similar position with the next recumbent I'm going to build. I find myself going round and round in circles about this that and the other. In the end, I have to be disciplined about what and why I'm building it....make that the number one priority and go from there. It means that other aspects have to be sacrificed - again, to an extent.

At the end of the day, regardless of what anybody says, there's no substitute for experience, and you just have to go and try out these things, which I do understand, can be quite a time consuming process.

My first thought was a Bacchetta with USS (which is what I would like, it's the cockpit on a Giro that puts me off them). Yes mr Blod, I like that one as well!

This is as close as I've come so far. A bit twitchy, but also a bit high.

Why not a Velomotion?

They're available on eBay.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123355917947
