...After all, a camera phone can take a better photo of a situation than a DSLR you have left at home.
I think this is the most important aspect of a phone that can take half decent pics. And remember to blow all that dust and gunk of the lens first... :)

I you're refering to my picture ;), the marks are not on my lens, they're on the train window. :(
Good detail. I can read "Jane Olivia Vernon" on the grave stone. Can't quite make out the dates - 1734(?)- though.
I would have been much better off with the dSLR had I been bothered to carry it around.

And one of the main points of the thread, a decent camera phone (or even a crappy one) is better than no camera.
I think the firework photos show just what can be done with a modern phone
Those fireworks pics are nice (particularly the second one).
I never really use the camera on my phone but this thread is making me think I should use it a bit more. Of course, I'll never get a decent sized print out of them. :P ;)
Interestingly your phone has 100x the storage of my first IBM PC (and I'm talking Hard Drives not memory here)

Mine is a phone first and camera second though.
In fact, by use, it's an MP3 player first, phone second and a camera third.
When I was looking for a new phone I made sure it had decent MP3 and Camera functions as well but primarily I was buying a phone.
I would never buy a camera this poor* just because it had communications functions.
*Although it produces decent images for a phone, it is still only the equivalent of a £30 camera (due mainly to a lack of zoom and comparitively poor lens)
Having said all that, I just realised that I have a nice phone with a good MP3 player and an acceptable camera, 2Gb of storage, MS Outlook Synch, Internet Acces and an FM Radio for £100. A device that would have been science-fiction not so long ago.

While camera-mobile phones optically, may never reach the standards of good compacts which are similar in size; they are convenient.

This one looks pretty close to being a bona fide compact digital camera with added phone:

I find the alarms, and calander event alarms very useful.
I've always thought that there are several other functions that could be added.
How about electric razor? ;D
Might be difficult to hear if you're using the phone function at the same time. ;)
£100? :o Mine was only £80.
The C905 still probably wouldn't match up to the £56 Sony-Cyber-shot-S730
The C905 still probably wouldn't match up to the £56 Sony-Cyber-shot-S730
It wouldn't even come close technically but that's not the point. It's about how far camera-phones have come rather than how far cameras have come.
The Sony-Cyber-shot-S730 isn't an MP3 player, Alarm Clock, Radio, Internet Browser, Calendar, Notepad, Telephone, SatNav or Electric-Razor simulator.
Can we see some 100% crop examples too? ;)

Errrmmmm yes, back in the seventies he had a one hit wonder, he claims that punk has always been close to his heart. To be fair and I didn't hang around for long he can play guitar pretty well although the show tunes they played were pretty naff IMHO but I had to go for the novelty value. Do remember that not everyone into punk nowadays look like me, but that is what punk was and is about, just being yourself, at the time they were on stage there was more hardcore bands on the other stages. Please forgive my next comments. I know very little about music and less about the punk scene. What I am about to type isn't meant to mock, merely express my surprise - perhaps my ignorance!
Lloyd Grosman is a punk rocker??? Has he always been into punk? If so then he has gone up in my estimation. Just goes to show you shouldn't judge people by their public persona.
And, there don't appear to be many people in the audience that look like punk rockers (though I know you do  ) How come?

They're complete game-changers, I was totally wrong years ago when I was ranting about "who needs a camera on a phone?" Citizen journalism, instantly, globally: snap and send. Glorious.
Twitpic rocks.
Without wanting to get too bogged down in pixel peeping, I think that a scaled down image with an additional 100% crop allows for reasonable comparisons to be made, although there will be a fair bit of 'user variation'... BTW do you know what level of EXIF data the phone camera records..?The 100% crop is showing the following in FxIF:

Sony Ericsson K800i.
Photo is cropped but otherwise untouched. I had to take a few, using a different area for exposure, before I got something that wasn't washed out or too dark. That's no different to most cameras in this situation though.
If it is a K800i then you can manually adjust the exposure with the arrow keys.

I really like the pictures you've taken with the K800i.
I am looking for a phone with camera, for taking snaps whilst I'm out.
K800i seems to fit the bill, but is no longer available.
Should I go for a second hand one? Or are the newer models significantly better? C902? any thoughts?

Thanks for the above, C902 has a 5MP camera which I'd like, out of interest do you use the GPS on your C702 much? and how useful do you find it? Might have to add the 702 to my list!

Loafer, I've only just seen this; it's a swallow-tail moth.
It’s sobering to look back at the old reviews of the cameras that we included. The earliest, the Canon EOS10D was a marvel of 2003. Phil Askey from DPReview described it as “the absolute best in its class, with the best image quality, lowest high sensitivity noise, superb build quality and excellent price.” He described the “Excellent resolution”, the “Noise free ‘silky smooth’ images”, with “very low noise levels even at ISO 1600.” The EOS 10D ran rings around the film that we’d been using for 50 years in terms of clarity and freedom from grain.
Yet it’s comprehensively humbled by modern phones. The iPhone out-shoots it, and the Nokia out-resolves it, all by huge margins.

HTC Desire S ?
It's done a nice job of difficult light. The detail in the tree branches is ridiculous for a "pin hole" lens.
Just looking at your FLIKR stuff. Apart from the obvious telephoto lens, it's not obvious, quality wise, where the HTC photos run into the D80 photos.
I'm tempted to drive out to a favourite photo spot, armed with all my family's cast off phones and do a head-to-head.
Motorola MB525:
After my eye op in February.
Just got a new (Mk2) Motorola Moto G. It's a £149 phone so nothing special but it has an 8Mp camera on the back and a 2Mp "selfie" camera on the front.
The main camera resolves detail, colours and contrast better but I'm still impressed by the bottom image (after a bit of tweaking to get come contrast and sharpness back).

Out of interest, can you post the pin-hole capture before your bit of tweaking ?
I don't have the originals so here are 2 new ones, straight out of the phone, stood in the same spot (not zoomed, that's just the focal lengths of the 2 lenses)

To put it in perspective, I paid about £300, in 2001, for a 2Mp Fuji. I then had to pay about £50 for a 256Mb card (I think that's what I paid).
I put 32Gb of storage in the phone for £12. It would take me quite a while to list all the functions of a modern Android phone (Video player, Music system, diary......etc, etc for a hundred other functions).
It's all pretty extraordinary to think about the tech available in a mobile phone.
I know that the Guildford Space Centre use mobile phones for the internals of some of their satellite experiments because they have all the tech they need (GPS, powerful processors, accelerometers, powerful "radio" transmitters..).
The latest batch of phones have 4K video capability (which says as much about their processing power as their video capability).
Here's some 720p footage from mine at the weekend. Obviously I wouldn't have said no to 1080p but hey-ho, it's not too bad.

Is zoom not pointless on a phone since its a fixed lens. You might just as well take the picture without zoom then crop the result.

Is zoom not pointless on a phone since its a fixed lens. You might just as well take the picture without zoom then crop the result. Not necessarily. The digital zoom will be happening before conversion to JPEG and the loss of resolution that goes with that, so better to do in camera. You could of course test this theory
A smart phone with a decent camera might well cost the same as a good quality "real" camera but you can do Facebook and make phone calls onna "real" camera ;D

I think the xkcd is good but missed out the step where the only way you can send photos was to put them into a word.doc - shudders.
