11sp for MTB !

Full of the usually steamy marketing, but they have done something slightly different rather than just adding another cog and making everything thinner.  Looks like 1xN is confirmed as mainstream cool now.

So, compared to 2x8 (or 3x8), it has:

Less gear range
thinner and weaker chain
Thinner and faster wearing cogs
Smaller chainring giving more ground clearance
One less shifter and one less derailleur

And will almost certainly cost more.

Marketing gimmick? Marketing triumph. Cut the number of components (and hence manufacturing cost), build in greater wear rates (so you sell more spares). Sell it as an 'improvement'.

Not sure why I'd need 10 more speeds on a mountain bike:o

Saw a review this morning, seems its not compatible with standard hubs.

It's got pretty much identical gear range to my 2x8, which I have been happy with.  Can't disagree about the likely wear rates and initial pricing tho.

I do like the cage lock on the rear derailleur though. Provided, of course, that it can't engage accidentally.
