Emily is back in the UK and giving a couple of talks on her adventures.

That sounds like a rather good idea! Thanks for the heads up. I think we may well troll along.
-
I'll be in That London for a meeting...
might have to get a later train back!
-
Oh I was just thinking about Emily the other day! I had no idea she had gone off on these adventures. Shame I won't be able to be in London, can someone report back here? Thanks for this, glad I spotted it on one of my infrequent forum stop-offs :-)
-
I reckon I can be there for 6.30.
Do we have a quorum? :D
-
Sadly unable to attend either event. :(
-
deffo trying to make the london one.
-
Sadly I won't at this now. I've just had a gruelling 50-miler in very strong winds and I'm knackered.
-
Emily has updated her blog regarding her plans - wishing her well over the coming months.

-
It's improbable, I know, but is this cyclist at 29:22 our lovely Emily? It doesn't quite look like her but then it just might be.

That is Em !
-
Heh, I'm pleased with that, good spot by me! Thanks wp.
The whole documentary is well worth a watch, btw.
-
Well done!
Seeing her always makes me smile.

Also gets a mention in this obligatory Grauniad link.
I used to see her pretty regularly when I worked in central London; not so much now I'm in the wilds of the east.
-
I really miss her blogging.
-
Emily has started to blog again - but with a very poignant latest update. Wishing her well over the coming months.

-
Yeah, read that yesterday. Looking forward to what's to come.
-
Mmmf. Right on the mark. Gosh, I wish I had her talent with words.
-
Oh, my God.
For someone like Emily to write that makes me feel ...
Lots of things. Affirmed. Comforted. En-Courage-d.
Having a bit of a cry now.
Thanks Emily.

Right then! (http://thatemilychappell.com/2014/01/right-then/)

And two more.

That post about Balochistan is really thought-provoking.
I feel so lucky to live here. Even though our government is a bunch of despicable fucks, and there's mad knife crime and drugs scything our young people off, it's comparatively extremely safe, even for women.
-
Yes, a government of despicable fucks is better than no government.
I confess I'd never really thought about the risks we take ourselves putting other people in danger in order that we can do these things - at least not in that way, it's obvious in some other circumstances such as mountain rescue. I could kind of relate to what she said about staying in Quetta and visiting the guarded hotel, as there were places like that when we were in Bangalore, even before the Mumbai attack. In fact, there were bombs in Blr too, part of India's inter-communal terrorism, but no one was killed. Anyway, those luxury hotels are popular with Indians too as a sort of shopping destination, but the whole thing is very claustrophobic (in both senses). Must be fifty times as bad in a "terror hotspot".

Iceland..... at this time of year..... :o Makes my little July pootle seem like a walk in the park.....
-
Impressive adventure.
-
That . . . looks like my idea of heavenly cycling. Ice - no cars - clear vistas.
Of course the reality is probably far harsher than I can comprehend. Would it be lonelier in the middle of a tundra, no contact with the outside world, than alone in the middle of a city or crowded campsite?
-
she's done an article on cycle messengers (http://www.theguardian.com/cities/2014/aug/06/-sp-cycle-courier-life-urban-cowboys-bike-messengers)
-
And it looks like a book is on it way ... Emily Chappell’s Unburdened: The Life and Opinions of a London Cycle Courier will be published by Guardian Faber in 2016 ... found at the bottom of the linked above article.
-
Goodness! Well spotted, Woolly, and well done (and, I feel sure, well written, though obviously we can't say yet), Emily!

A really nice post from Emily there.

Lovely.

Emily will be appearing live in person on stage tonight in a theatre near you! Or at least, in April in London, Bristol, Manchester and Cambridge.
-
And hopefully in our front room with plenty tea and cake in May :)
-
Some gorgeous photos of Vancouver-area Pacific coast recently posted on twitter...
-
There I was, sitting up in bed drinking my morning cuppa and reading Chapter 10 of her latest book when I received a tweet from Emily celebrating the fact that she had won the Women’s cycling writer of the Year award.
Great way to celebrate YACF’s 12 birthday!
-
Congratulations to her! (Hmm, she won't read that here)
-
I spied her at the London Bike Show (https://medium.com/@jollygoodthen_75205/london-bike-show-129df07d1b2b) last year while sitting on the floor having lunch:

Great news, Congrats, Emily. I must read the book again.
-
I didn't know until reading the book how close Emily was to Mike Hall. Her chapter on grief is heart-rending.
-
Yep, it struck me that whereas the first book, ostensibly about being a cycle courier, is really about the experience of being Emily Chappell, the second one, ostensibly about long-distance racing, is really about friendship and grief. Which is not surprising; the most readable books about cycling (probably other 'sports' too) tend to be really about something else.

Was on BBC world service , in conversation with Fiona of Transcontinental Race fame.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3cszj30 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3cszj30)
-
That was interesting. Especially liked when (I can't remember now if it was Emily or Fiona) said what she liked about long-distance racing was that although it's tough, it's simple. A bit like cycle touring!
I was struck by how many references they made to Emily being from Wales. She doesn't live there now!

I can't quite wrap my head round the idea of her actually *living* anywhere. In my mind she spends every night on some random person's floor or halfway up a mountain onna bike.
-
Probably in her mind too. But the demands of Real LifeTM intervene, even for her.
-
Emily's latest book was delivered by bike courier, from my local feminist co-operative bookshop earlier. It's been wiped down with Dettol & added to the teetering pile of books to be read.
-
I was taking to my dear pal Penelope yesterday and Emily cropped up in conversation - about her cycling in Alaska in the winter: Pen's sister lives in Canada. I sent Pen a link to some stuff of Emily's, and then I realised that her blog has been fixed and works properly again!
-
FWIW after 40 years in journalism I'd just like to say I've seen a lot of words and IMHO Emily really is a great writer. Not just good, but great. If she wanted to focus on just writing she'd be one of the greats.
(But I suspect she has A Real Life which is more important.)

Yesterdays episode of the "Just Ride" podcast is with Emily.
