Charlotte's & Wowbagger's Wales Tour
« on: 17 August, 2010, 04:31:26 pm »
I ought to do a ride report but here are some photos to be going on with. (I'm sure Charlotte has about twice as many pictures as I do).

Charlotte's bandaged ankle. I was very impressed by the job done by the woman from the B & B across the road. She also gave us a lift up to the hospital, which, coincidentally, was where my mother was taken when, at the age of 86, she broke her leg climbing in Snowdonia.

Where my sister used to live - Craig y Llyn, the first house on your right as you enter Llanberis from the north.

The few occasions that I was ahead of Charlotte were usually after fast descents. There are few more exhilarating than that from Pen y Pass to Beddgelert.

40% is the steepest I've seen advertised on a gradient sign. This one is behind Harlech Castle.

There's a 10mph limit on the Mawddach Bridge.

Happy Valley, or the Aberdyfi bypass

Another bridge, this time over the River Dyfi.

Charlotte in classic pose.

The Teifi Pools. The weather was too glowering for us to wild camp - besides, we had been offered free camping in the beer garden of the Black Lion in Bont (which turned out to be not so free after all).

We camped at Nantycroi farm, just south of Mwnt. There was a brisk westerly blowing.

Charlotte passing some time with a bullock.

The Preseli Mountains. Watching the weather was an object lesson in geography. The sky was blue and clear over the sea, then as the air had to lift to get over the land, so clouds would appear and for a couple of days we hardly saw the sun, even though almost half the sky was blue. The Preselis, being almost 1500 feet up, tended to the the heaviest clouds.

Looking down on Fishguard. Once up the top, the road heading towards St. David's was one of the best I've cycled.

Aber Fach. I was thinking about wild camping here but I didn't really have enough water.

Near Trefin.

Tyddewi

Wildlife at Pitch 23, West Hook farm

Looking north across St. Bride's Bay. My pitch was so sloping that I reckon it was only the fact that my pegs were well hammered in that stopped me from rolling into the sea.

Sunset over Skomer Island.

And now, Marloes. I had the entire beach to myself.

Mid Wales. Shhhhhh, don't tell anybody but it is like an empty Lake District.

Nice photos.

That last one... cameras normally have a 10s auto timer. You must be a fast runner!

Lovely pics Wow, thanks for sharing them.  I spent most of my childhood holidays in Snowdonia and have done a few short tours there, but don't think I've ever been south of Dolgellau. That's an omission I must rectify.

Shouldn't that 3rd picture of Charlotte be added to the SheWee thread ....?   :o :o

Lovely pics bringing back memories of getting to grips with cycling. We have cycled over the Dyfi bridge many times as it's about 8 mles from where we lived. I shall look forward to the report  :)

The Good Lady C was actually emptying her Camelback or equivalent.

Great pictures ..... well most of them! Wales is indeed a super place to tour, I love every part I've been to. The hill behind Harlech Castle has the steepest gradient sign I've ever seen aswell. Good job it's not very long (although I've never actually got up it).

Lovely photos, Wow.

I am suffering acute nostalgia. We spent several teenage family holidays in the Preseli hills (Dinas, near Newport, Pembrokeshire) as our then next-door neighbours owned Fagwr Meredith, where we stayed.

My parents are just vacating their home of 42 years, which doesn't help...

Ha, I guessed correctly.  In my defence, I have the same equipment...

Both the 40% Harlech Castle road, and the 0% Barmouth Bridge, are mentioned in "50 Quirky Bike Rides".
Splendid photos.  Welcome back to civilisation.
