One Hundred Push Ups Challenge
« on: 07 November, 2008, 10:49:48 am »
Anyone want to improve their upper body strength?

I'm going to do this, starting from Monday:
http://www.hundredpushups.com/index.html

I haven't even done the initial test yet, admittedly, but what the heck, it'll be good for me.  :)

It's a structured programme, with three levels depending on your starting point, to build up to doing 100 push ups. You need to do it three times a week - probably Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Anyone else up for it?

I used to be able to do 50 no problem; don't recall ever trying to do 100.  I'll take a closer look at this site - might be joining you.
;D  Andrij.  I pronounce you Complete and Utter GIT

I'm not sure that putting a number on the amount of push press ups you can do is relevant. It depends on stuff like build, gender etc...

I can do 100+ without breaking sweat. Not because I'm super human - it's just that I'm skinny. A bit like a wee Italian climber rather than a Belgian sprinting beast.

Sorry if that's going a bit OT!....
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

In fairness the site and the plan do take into account people being different. It's slightly more than just a 'target to 100' plan.

I'm skinny and can only do about 10! It'll be interesting to see if that changes over the next 6 weeks...

It also depends on technique: a much, much smaller number indeed can be just as difficult if done slowly maintaining a constant load.

I might give it a go anyway  :P

I can do about 30 now. But my previously injured L shoulder doesn't like it so I'll see how it goes.

On the initial test I did 37. I wonder if I've just made life hard for myself.

Seems like a good structuring. At the moment I'm a classic exercise binger - I'll go through routines of press-ups and sit-ups for a few weeks: 3 x 30 press ups, 3 x 30 sit-ups, 3 x 10 curves (10 kg each), then I'll just stop for months. Maybe sticking to this program would help.

So I'm in the masochist slot, column 3 of week 3.

I'll join in!

My upper-body strength has been suffering, so I was thinking of starting something like this anyway.

I once embarked on something similar for chin ups. Started being able to manage 5. After 40 months, I could do a couple of sets of 35.

I've never been good at push ups. Could do a hundred situps easy, but 20 pushups left me sore the next day.

Looks like fun. Anyone know about kids doing stuff like this ? Pcolbeck junior is trying to get fitter at present and it would be fun for us to do this together (he is 12) if it's safe for kids to do this kind of thing.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

It will come as no surprise to those who have met me that this is not my area of expertise...

Just to make you all feel better I'll confess that I can't even do one :-[

I might try try the test using the 'half' ones, (from knees) though I think that'll still be under 10!

I was told by my surgeon, albeit it with a slightly bemused smile on his face, that my injuries meant I wouldn't ever be able to do push ups again...

At the moment I can't do 5.

A while ago, having built up to it I managed about 20, but after a few months it died down and I am back to not being able to do them.

Give me an easy 100 mile bike ride any day.

I can only do 10 at the moment, but I'm interested to see if I really can reach 100.  I'll join in :)

I can definitely do at least 20. Would probably collapse somewhere between 25 and 30. Could be very useful. There's a move on a climb at the Castle that I just can't do at the moment, that involves a pushing down and locking one arm out. 100 push ups would be good for that, I reckon!

I used to live just down the road from the Castle.  I've dived in the ponds behind.

How long ago was this? Were Billy and Kay behind the bar at the Brownswood yet, or was it still where you do not go?

I am a girl with girly arms and I can't do push-ups. And I don't care. Never in my life have I thought "my life would be so much better if I could do push-ups" - it's a skill I've never needed and it doesn't bother me in the least.

And that's what I said to the bloke teaching the Bodypump class when he exhorted me to try harder.
