Grand Tour teams truncated
« on: 30 November, 2016, 09:07:56 pm »
Reported today on the BBC news that all 3 Grand Tours in 2017 and beyond will have the same number of teams as in the past but reduced to 8 riders from 9 - supposedly to improve safety with fewer riders in the pack and make it harder for teams to control the race.   Those Frenchies will stop at nothing to try and get a countryman across the line first!

The ASO probably has more power than the UCI.

Smaller teams would improve the racing. The team directors will hate it though.
Wheel meet again, don't know where, don't know when...

The squad size thing has been quite entertaining

UCI: Let's have some more World Tour races
Teams: Shock, horror! - Our squads won't be big enough

ASO: Let's reduce the team sizes by one rider
Teams: Shock, horror! - We'll have to make a load of riders redundant

Probably not so entertaining if you're a mid ranking pro with a young family!

I think it's a good idea and they could probably go one rider smaller still. (And add 1 or 2 more teams)

That's why they went from 10 to 9, to increase the number of teams.

They want to reduce the number of riders in large races such as the Tour de France.  This is following the riders being knocked off by race/press vehicles this year: they think that the race is currently too big to safely fit on the roads.

I thought the number of teams remained the same?
