Wanted: Mavic 40 hole A519 or A719 700c rim

I've not decied what to do yet but a low cost solution would be to find a Mavic 40 hole A519 or A719 rim (new, or good condition used) (or as complete wheel with 135mm axle and shimano compatible cassette hub)

are you after 700c?

I know you say Mavic but noticed Spa had some 40h 700c Sputnik rims in black for a good price

Yes, 700c (subject amended).

I've not tried Sputnik rims, might be an option.  They are 25mm wide compared to 24.5mm for the Mavic's so brake adjustment & realignment might be necessary when swapping wheels.  The Sputnik's are also a little heaver at 690g compared with 565g for an A719.  Not sure if the spoke length is the same.  I'd still prefer to stick with Mavic if I can find one as most our bikes have either A319, A519, or A719 rims.  Problem is I've got more front wheels than matching rear and there's quite a bit of rim wear on our last Mavic 40 spoke rear.  We've tried a 36 spoke rear wheel on the tandem, it lasted longer than I expected but I think 40 spoke is significantly more reliable.

We have been running 40 hole Sputnik rims on our tandem, they have covered about 8000 miles now and the rear neeeds replacing.
To be fair they have been reliable and have made a strong wheel but quite a dead feeling to them if that makes sense.
Looking a rebuilding them with either Velocity chukker or Alex g6000 rims, we have the latter on our tandem trike and have taken quite a bit of pounding over the last couple of winters with no problems.

Regarding the feel of the wheels our Velocity deep-v wheels feel responsive, our Mavic rim wheels give a smoother ride.  Given the similar profile of the Sputnik to the Mavic's and add the extra weight then I can imagine why you describe them as feeling dead.  If the spokes in your old wheel have lost some tension then that will increase the 'dead' feeling.

To be honest they have always felt that way, but they have been pretty much bomb proof really.
Now they are more or less worn out what something a bit more responsive.
