Giro starts today - and it's on "normal" TV

http://www.questtv.co.uk/giro-ditalia-highlights/

Channel 37 on freeview. EDIT: 10pm every night, 1h highlights package by the look of it.

Shame it's not on ITV4 or C4, but it's something. I don't think I've ever watched a Giro stage!

I prefer watching the Giro to the TDF (hethen). It tends to produce better racing and doesn't follow the formulaic routes of the TDF that seem to be repeated every other year (apart from the occasional foray into the UK).

You also get a greater chance of snow in the high mountains at this time of year which adds extra excitement.

Go Geraint!

Isn't there some Bike Channel on FreeSat that isn't on Freeview? My Dad's been irritating me for months, asking me if I've seen such-and-such a programme on it

Some of the programmes on the bike channel seem to have a loud backing track music dialogue in the
background, which makes the voice commentary almost inaudible; which is very irritating.

Depends on whether they're commentators or colemantators.

And there goes the British challenge, taken out when a rider collided with a stationary police escort motorcycle. Both Thomas and Yates lost 5 minutes to Quintana.

I'm not saying they would have stated with Quintana up the climb but that we will now never know.

Utter disaster for them all, and several others with GC ambitions.

No-one would have stuck with Quintana up there but it's a longish time trial on Tuesday so any losses could well have been recovered but not five minutes.

I'm cheering for Domoulin from here on.

The Colemantators were quick to blame the motorcyclist, but he didn't seem to have stopped suddenly in front of the peloton from what I could see and he was right at the edge of the road where spectators could easily have been.

He was on the edge of the tarmac, but just after a bend (and on the outside where the flow would take the riders), when the race for position at the bottom of the major climb was in full flow. Wrong place at the wrong time.  :(

Race Director accepts it was an error of judgement by police motorcyclist.

Protocol is that motorbikes, cars etc shoudl stop at the right hand side of the road, so he was in the wrong.

Considering what happened on Sunday, that was brilliant riding today by G and there is no way I could be that sanguine after what happened.

I think he thought he could bag the stage and salvage his Giro immediately. He was right to think so, though Dumoulin beat him convincingly in the end. Strong ride in a very hard time trial. I read there was a direct headwind for several kilometres near the end. Ouch.

There's no reason, as long as he's as fit as he says he is he couldn't go for it in the hills, see what the last day TT brings and target a top five in GC which would be quite a result.

Shame but saw it coming with his lack of pace on Wednesday.

Why bother with the tour? It'll all be based around Froome. He should take a break, create a new training block in July and prepare for the Vuelta where he could be team leader rather than a domestique for Froome.

Flop?

Perhaps a bit harsh considering the incident involving Thomas why not of Sky's making.  When your team leader is taken down by stupidity on behalf of those supposedly caring for the riders, I don't think this can be called a flop.

I agree it wasn't Thomas' fault, but the aim was to win GC. One of their leaders has now quit and the second leader is way down the general classification. IMO that's a flop.

Still, at least Sky haven't had any riders disqualified, unlike a few years ago.

Both of whom hit the deck when the Sunweb rider crashed into a motorbike that shouldn't have been there. Disappointing but hard to call it a 'flop'. Also remember Yates was taken out of the running in the same crash which was disappointing.

When people deserve criticism then I can see the point, but I'm not sure what you think is worth criticism this year. If it had been another big team would you be saying the same?
