This looks fun. I'll see if I can get the time. If I succeed I'll ride up from Harrogate if anyone wants to join in.

Be good if PB and the Brum crown could make it too.

Looks as though i'll be in York that day and I could ride up from there...

If anyone wants to ride up from Darlington,  though,  let me know

Will your route from York pass NTR? If so drop by and I will cycle from home!

Do I need to book time off work? I was going to leave work (HPL) at 14:00 and roll on up then?
Dr Google reckons 5 anna half hours via Richmond, is that too late for tea?

They'd officially stopped serving when I rocked up at half nine last time, but took pity and cooked me something anyway.

Food till nine. But aim for a bit earlier.

I reckon five and a half hours is probs OK - it look us about that long from Darlo, but we had camping kit and a brutal headwind.

I'll probably try to dodge Richmond this time around - it was shit last time, and this time the schools are back....

Yay!
Many thanks; much appreciated.
I'll be travelling by train from Milton Keynes, so will probably ride from Oxenholme (approx 35 miles), or maybe Penrith. Anyone else going via the WCML?
May you always have tail wind.

Me, but I'll be coming in the opposite direction, down from Glasgow. I haven't yet decided where to ride from: currently favouring Carlisle, but Penrith and Oxenholme are also contenders.

Excellent - day booked off work and I've an idea for a nice route up. Saturday will need to be short route home I think, as family event in pm...

So anyone who fancies a ride up from Harrogate leaving between 10am and 11am let me know. 80 to 90 miles and, obviously, a bit hilly.

I'm convincing myself there aren't any hills round there. :-X

Why else do you think it's called Tan Dale?

Carlisle to Tan Hill (50 miles) is beyond my level of fitness at the moment, so I'll be cycling from Oxenholme or Penrith. Haven't looked at routes in detail; ease of map navigation will be a factor, as will amount of sunshine & dryness (for calculating the optimal tarmac:dirt ratio).  :D

I can get to Oxenholme or Penrith for between 11.30 & 12.30.
May you always have tail wind.

Penrith is a better option if you're worried about your fitness as the route is a lot flatter.

We looked at that for us but it looks like we'll not make it this time, unfortunately.

Currently debating the relative merits of this vs the FNRttC to Brighton...  This has the compelling arguments of better views, less sleep deprivation and no Southern trains.  It's also hillier and more expensive.

I also vaguely remember something along the lines of "next time I'm bringing a mountain bike".

I don't know, why is it called Tan?

Chucked a holiday in at work, hopefully have it approved. It'll be Northallerton for me I reckon, unless there's a westerly then I might get the train across to Carlisle.

Use a local train to escape Mordor and get to a nice bit, then tour across to York, stay the night before at the Den and leave your Spare Luggage, go on a SBA, ride back on the COR route to Darlo/NTR/YRK depending on mojo levels with train bailout options, have a nice warm bath and curry, a decent night's sleep in a Proper Bed and tour back to Mordor. Cheap as chips :D

Hm.  That might make more sense for the ALC meet the week before...

Anyway, I've decided that since the southern shandy-drinking Fridays aren't even going up Ditchling Beacon, this is clearly the superior option.  I reckon approaching from the west is best hills and trains wise, and then it is - as we all know - downhill all the way to Darlo.

ETA: Okay, I've booked a bunk at the inn (not having to carry camping gear makes it more MTB-friendly).  Trains are a work in progress.
