Germany between Christmas & New Year
« on: 18 September, 2017, 12:42:57 pm »
I'm toying with the idea of travelling to Wuppertal* in northern Germany after Christmas, returning just before New Year.

Before I go ahead, I thought I'd check if the country shuts down entirely at that time, with most bars & restaurants shut for the duration. No point travelling there if everywhere's shut!

* Because my German teacher told my class about the overhead railway in 1972 & I've always wanted to go on it!

The Wuppertal Schwebebahn is fab but Wuppertal as a holiday destination less so.

My suggestion is have your holiday in Düsseldorf and take a train to Wuppertal one day (it's about 10-15 minutes). Or bring your bike, train up to Wuppertal and ride the Schwebebahn, then ride down the Neanderthal (valley) back to Düsseldorf.

I wrote about this in my blog some time ago: http://www.auntiehelen.co.uk/dusseldorf-13-july-2010/

And a more recent visit, where I found the general mood not so good: http://www.auntiehelen.co.uk/six-wheels-in-germany-month-22/

German Christmas is 24-25 Dec so everything will be open after that. Sundays shops are shut but cafes and restaurants always open. You will never starve in DE.

The AfD are big in Wuppertal, as were Pegida.

Thanks AH. We'll be flying to Dusseldorf, so that suggestion makes sense.
