I tried and tried to like his music... and failed.

However I did admire what he stood for.  No compromise.  None.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

It's Michael Clarke's dancing that I'll always associate with The Fall.

I saw an early incarnation of The Fall in Liverpool. I reckon it must have been about 1978 as I was certainly underage at the club at which they were playing.  They were supporting some Gong spin-off band and entry on the night was free. I remember being totally bewildered by them and then bemused when, at the end of their set, they passed a carrier bag around to try and raise enough money to get back to Manchester.

Echoing Lee, I never became a fan but they certainly appear to have been influential.
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

Like Lee and Redlight I’ve never “got” The Fall and the tribute on 6Music has just made me turn the radio off but he stuck to his guns and was obviously great at what he did.

R.l.p.

I dunno, but I thought they were shit though I should credit him with persistence. The Fall were one of those bands that it was cool to like without actually having to listen to (as long as you could Vic-tor-EEE-AH).

How sad.

For all his bravado about his drinking, he must have had a horrible last few years. He’s looked about 75 for the last 5 years or so.

Like Lee and Redlight I’ve never “got” The Fall

Are you not a Gillian Anderson fan?? Probably Dornan's best work too. Brilliant programme, truly creepy at times too.

Like yer man says in "Rome", I did not know he was alive until he was dead.  I can't feel I missed much.

Mark E Smith - a poem

Mark E Smith was a surly git
He had a voice of tar
The only skill he ever had
Was getting drunk in dark bars.

The general comment seems to be, "I found his music unlistenable but he was an icon".
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Aye, that's pretty awesome. I can't remember, are you a Prestwich lad yourself?

I saw the Fall live two-and-a-half times, and I haven't been to many gigs with such a fervent audience, or such a diverse audience. It wasn't just a bunch of blokes who were the right age at the right time.

:)

Reminds me of Peel's line when listeners would ask which Fall album they should listen to first - he'd invariably reply "You need to listen to them all".

Am I the only one here to have seen Michael Clark dancing? The few videos available are pretty carp, and give you no sense of the energy and mesmerising quality of being there. While I wouldn't listen to them on their own, The Fall music was more than perfect for it.

Here's a couple of vids, I seriously don't expect anyone to think much of them (NB - NSFW !!!)

I read the flurry of posts on bookface about Mark's passing and had to Google his name to find out who he was.

Obviously knew who John Peel was but never listened to his radio programme so, other than having heard the name, was completely in the dark about the band, too.

Now I'm wondering if I missed something . . .

No, I'm not from Prestwich, I'm not even a Manc.
I'm from Haslingden and went to Manchester Poly. There was a girl. She lived in Manchester .....

No, you didn't.

That's a relief.

Give them a chance. The fantastic groove in Blindness Andy linked above is just one moment. The worst that could happen is you've listened to some new music.

Yes, the groove is where it's at.
Who's this "Andy" of whom you speak ?

I’ve played that YouTube several times since it was linked here. Marvellous.

I’d heard The Fall before, a bit Meh. But that is good. As Deano says, exposure to new music is good.

Unless it is Contemorary R&B. If you think that is music.
