Fat bikes?
« on: 22 March, 2018, 06:51:19 pm »
I’ve seen a couple of bikes locally this week with preposterously wide tires. I think they’re what is called ‘fat bikes’?

What are they all about then? Are they just a fad or do they have a specific purpose?

Perhaps I should, have put this in the middle aged thread 😁

Where do I start?  I’ve had them for about 7 years, now on my second. Originally designed for snow like the Iditarod race but great on sand or just for general trail riding. The low pressure tyres give a ridiculous amount of grip. Always end with a grin on my face when I ride mine.

Specific purpose is somewhere on the "grips on mud/sand/snow" to "looks cool" spectrum, depending on the owner.

They make mountain biking easier for those of us with lack of bike handling skills. They are also a lot of fun to ride.
