Where can I get a really big kitbag?
« on: 03 May, 2010, 06:22:22 pm »
85 x 48 x 30 or bigger.  The blow-up doll kayak was ex-demo sans bag, and wrapped in a tarp and lashings it just looks like a human torso prepped for disposal.  Help, before the police come.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Try a Ships Chandlers. They sell large kitbags for carrying stuff onto boats; both clothes but also gibs and other types of sails. That may be the sort of thing that would be suitable.

Assuming that your dimensions are in cm, that's around 120L of volume.

Cotswold Outdoor have the "North Face Base Camp Duffle" in XL, which is 140L.  It is however £109. :o

(You can't easily link to Cotswold's rather fuckwitted web site, but you should be able to search on it).

F&T have the Berghaus Mule Wheeled Bag which is 110L and "only" £65.
Actually, it is rocket science.

This (150l version) is pretty humungous. It's also a drybay which means you can stow kit that you want to keep dry in it whilst out on the water.

What inflatable have you got? We have a Sevlor 2 person Colorado aka Blue Barge, great fun but hard work compared to our rigid kayaks.

It's the Sevy Pointer K1.  I think chandlers' sound wise (looked at cricket bags earlier: way too small).

I've got a Rab kit bag,  bombproof construction, a big double zipped opening & shoulder straps for ease of carrying.  Mountain Equipment & North Face do similar ones.  This style is probably easier to get things into than the big drybag Chris linked to.

How long does it take to pump that boat up?  We looked at some inflatables at the Outdoor Show, and they seem to have improved massively in recent years.
Getting there...

Draw what you want and take it here;
Exeter tarpaulin services - bespoke covers

Keep telling them you only want simple and it'll probably cost less than many of the suggestions here.  The same grade of material as Ortlieb panniers will be £8 - £10 sq meter plus whatever they charge for labour.  If you're not fussy about colour you may get a better deal.  I used them for a boat cover and it worked out nearly half the price of an off the peg one, though it was a long time ago.

(oops, the Highlander one is 5cm short in the critical dimension)

(ooh, they could be handy!)

Not so long.  From totally flatted and dismantled, there's a bit of faff to put the bow and stern plates in, slide the floor in and attach the seat but after that it's fifteen minutes to blow up the sides and then the floor, then top off the sides and give it a shake.  All the inflatable parts are in sleeves, so there's double skin all round.

About the same time it takes the others to fill in the hire paperwork...

The pool-toy boats (the £60 ones) are still pants - they're BSOs -  but these more boaty boats are scoring well.  Sevy Colorados are all over.  I must confess I went for the Pointer almost exclusively after stalking the Geohashing site.  When the Vancouver girls were cheerfully writing up whitecaps, I figure it has to be worthy.

I was thinking of getting a Colorado...

...don't forget that if you want to use it on any rivers or canals, you'll need a British Waterways license.  If you join the British Canoe Club, the license is included in the membership.

With regard to bags, I'd suggest looking at the local dive shops.

A football team kit bag would easily be big enough.

The one for our 11-a-side team holds 15 sets of shorts, socks, shirts plus a stool, couple of footballs and a medical kit. Dunno who makes it though, can ask if required.

Having a google for "team kit bags" might find something. One like this:-

KlubKits | Football Kits, Club Team Wear, Football Equipment and sports equipment

Size is 51x89x51 and it's only £15.99 And a Nike sweatshop swoosh too.

Dang, didn't spot that.

Maybe give Robin Hood watersports an email, see if they can help. They sell a lot of inflatable gear.

The trick with the Cotswold site is to click on the "Accessible Site" link at the lower left as soon as you get in. It gets rid of all the Flash, works faster, and gives you links you can copy.

Alas it's (1) made of finely-pressed pure money and (2) doesn't give sizes.  The size is important (otherwise I'd have said volume: boats aren't like beer): there are parts of this kit that are rigid, and the key part is 85 of your Earth centimetres long.

Where did you see the size, Greenbank?  I'm going boss-eyed.  Ah, google... 20x20x39 inches, that ought to do it.  Now to find a local sports shoppe!

"The sizes and colours available are listed on the drop down menus below."

Choose the colour (anything as long as it is black) and the sizes (only one) are listed in the other drop down box.

No idea about internal sizes.

That bag is about half the size of our 11-a-side kitbag. Can find out where that comes from tomorrow...
