Well the hot weather has gone for now but in the vague hope it may return the question is "what is the best way to make largish quantaties of ice using a domestic freezer?

I fill a whopping great tupperware box with tap water and put it in the freezer overnight. Next day I turn out the ice brick onto a clean towel on the floor, fold over so it's fully wrapped, then beat hell out of it with a hammer or rolling pin.

You can stop at whatever stage of lump size you desire. Shovel the lumps into a freezer bag or two and throw back into the freezer for keeping.

This method is cheap, easy, fun, therapeutic.

We either buy ready-made, or the bags with the little chambers in, like a pocket-sprung mattress.

It's a right PITA getting the chunks out, mind.  Like bubble-wrap with a Krypton Factor element.

We buy sacks and sacks of the stuff from the shops.

Alternatively, spend over £100 on an ice machine from Amazon. Add on £10.50 for delivery.
Wait indoors for days for delivery..
Enjoy delivery of machine on a day when there's an inch of rain and it's 7°C outside.

Discover Sainsbury's sell ice cubes for £1 for 2kg.

Or get a cunning device which is a bottle with a side shaped like honeycombs, add the adequate quantity of water wait a few hours and shake!

I've never seen one of those in a British supermarket though.

Buy a really crappy 80's electrolux fridge with the freezer compartment at the top and just chip off what you need from the ice flow that constantly creeps forth onto the top 2 shelves of the fridge.

Well I've already made 8kg with mine - so another 25 months, and it will have paid back.

A bit of planning ahead solves that problem easily.  You ought to be better at that, seeing as you're a cyclist.   :P

Assuming your demand for ice in February is similar to now...
