Trangia fuel

Out of interest what do you use in your trangia or other similar burner?   I ask because in Denmark the availability of Rodsprit seemed to be nil but I was able to buy ethanol in 1/2 and 1 litre bottles from general stores.   It seemed a tad more efficient too.

Meths with a drop of water.

And over-proof bourbon once, but it wasn't very good.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

There are no rodsprit  in Denmark, we call it "Denatureret sprit" .

"Denatureret sprit" are Ethanol mixed with 2% MEK  so it's undrinkable.
Methanol cant be bought without a police permit, due to toxicity.

Rodsprit are the Swedish name for the same mix (Ethanol/MEK).

Ah, thanks Gus.  I remember reading on the bottle 'Denatureret sprit' and thinking oh, this will probably burn.  Then I read ethanol and thought, YAY!

Where to get meths (methylated spirits)

International Fuel Names

A couple of useful links,  the first one is just Trangia fuel. The second one covers petrol, paraffin & white gas.

I use meths too, but I've never tried the drop of water - is there a reason behind it?

A little water decrease the amount of soot on the pans.
But don't go under 80% meth, then you water will never boil.

It's called rauðspritt  here.  It's slightly red and you mustn't drink it.  Before I found that the DIY shops sell it, I considered using some lab alcohol.

I want some HEET.  All the US sites say it's the best stuff for alcohol stoves.

But you can't buy it here  :(

UK "meths" (=methylated spirits) is appox 92% ethanol, 8% methanol, plus the purple dye and the stuff that makes it undrinkable.

It's a fuel line anti-freeze/water remover, surely a UK auto shop would have an equivalent? If you want, I can stop by an auto parts store and find out the ingredients for you.

Nice to see the use of phonetic letters, most Brits these days don't believe we used the same letter to pronounce "th" until a couple of hundred years ago or so.  Over here it's called the English thorn.

I say we should bring it back!

Looking at this thread i've decided Trangia fuel is a cultural thing ....meths meself; firesnot's awful stuff to boil things with.
Question everything, accept nothing.

That's not a thorn - it's an eth. This is a thorn: þ.

It's still sort of in use as the Y in "Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe" - early letter sets for printing were imported and didn't have a thorn, so they used Y instead.
