e-assist added to Moulton ATB tandem
« on: 20 September, 2016, 06:20:16 pm »
Drove to Great Abington, just SE of Cambridge, today to pick up my Moulton ATB tandem from ARCC. They specialise in adding e-assist to Moulton TSRs and Bromptons, as well as Cinellis.

The control box is mounted on the front of the steerer tube, and a Bosch 36v power tool battery clips into this. Currently 4Ah, but a 6Ah battery is just being released by Bosch. The fast charger only weighs 1kg, so will probably carry this rather than a spare battery, as it takes only 35 min to fully charge the 4Ah battery. The 250w motor is in the front wheel hub, and a sensor is fitted to the bottom bracket (the rear one in tandem configuration). This is the first tandem ARCC have equipped.

Solo bikes average about 30 miles on a charge, yet to discover how far it will take the tandem. We don't cover big mileages anyway. Hoping it will enable us to go up hills, as we usually stick to flat routes such as converted railway paths.

I can see I shall be tempted to use it with the ATB in solo configuration too!

TTIUWP
VELOMANCER

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

I can understand why you're doing it. Moulton ATBs convertible to tandem configuration are just a bit too common.

Michael Kater started it in Australia!

Doug Pinkerton made mine a few years ago, he'd made half a dozen at the time, one was for a client in Taiwan.

Just teasing you.

Michael is living in Thailand now. I chatted with him while I was over there but wasn't able to meet up. Maybe in 2018.

Here's a pic of me collecting the converted tandem from ARCC. The controller and battery clip into an attachment on the head tube, motor is in the front hub.
