Tomsk, have you got plans for the Santa Special? I am planning on Riding up to Great Bromley as the car will be in use. I see there is a path right along the Dual Carriageway out of Colchester so hopefully the weather plays along.
i've missed whatever this is but Great Bromley is where I live and I am actually there this week (visiting from Germany).

There's a much better route to Great Bromley than along the A133 though as the path ain't that great.

^ Andy Terry's 200km 'Santa Special' on the solstice [Sunday] - I'm planning on camping at the 'Strangers' Home' rather than riding over in the dark at silly o'clock; must be going soft  ;D

Ooohhh....I'd be happy to know more on this one. It is just about getting to the start at the Village Hall from Tiptree for me but anything that does not involve riding on a debris strewn path is a good thing.

Camping in December....getting up at 4am would be the soft option in my book!

Ok, if it's starting at the village hall then the A133 is probably the most direct route

Thanks, I had looked at a more 'back road' alternative but I just thought at this time of year in the dark early hours I'd probably be better off heading straight for the hall.

So....Wednesday - any ideas? An old favourite or something new? I happened to pass the Bell at Panfield today new to MEMWNS I think - not been there or heard anything about it. Its a Greene King house, but that's all I know. Lots of alternatives in Braintree though....

I am happy to roll over to the Bell at Panfield and as you say if it is not to our liking we can always find something else around Braintree.

I might be coming from home, it's all a bit unclear at the moment but I will be out. Other than Andy C33 is anyone else looking likely from Witham?

Shall we give the Bell a go? If it's not to our liking, then the King Billy is on our way home.

I do have a lovely route which goes directly past the Bell.  Unfortunately it's about 52 miles long which I think is a tad long for a cold winter's night.

Unless anyone wants to go a different way, how about this route? EDIT: <-- do not use this route unless you want to do the comedy off-roading that Tomsk kindly pointed out in a later post.  Use the one in this post instead.

Hmm... well spotted: looking at Streetview I can see a track that even OD would be loath to route us down...  I'll go back to GPX editor with a different routing option...  watch this space...

http://bikeroutetoaster.com/BRTWebUI/Course/747745  EDIT: sigh! don't use this on either (thanks DL and huggy) - use this one instead

has the added advantage of also going past the King Billy on the way home, just in case.

I am still not 1005 sure I will be at Spa Road for 19:30 tonight so don't wait for me. If I can't make it I will try to pick you up at Great Braxted and if that fails I will meet you at the Bell.

Given the route, I suggest meeting outside Maltings Academy on Spinks Road.

I should be able to do 7:30.  (I have a meeting that finishes at 7, but I'm working from home so it shouldn't be too hard for me to get there).

Tippers - are you likely to be coming from home, or from Witham?  If from home, then picking us up somewhere like Snows corner, or the corner of Sextons Lane and Braxted Park Road would buy you a little more time...
