Commonwealth Games Road Race
« on: 03 August, 2014, 08:17:31 am »
Anyone else watching?  It's a nightmare of a circuit, some hideous little climbs and tight narrow barriered sections.  Oh, and cobbles.  It's going to be fun if when it rains..

First lap for the women at present and they are going v e r y  s l o w l y but it should speed up a bit soon..

It is raining. I know a few of the riders and have ridden many of the roads. It is tougher than it looks.

A whole bunch of them just rode straight through some pedestrian lights on red.  Disgraceful!
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

It looks very 'Aldi' compared to the other commonwealth games.
What's up with the cars not letting the cyclist at the back through?

Inexperience. You have to find a DS who knows what they are doing from your own country, and then you could suffer behind a well meaning but numpty from another nation.

The commonwealth games is a high class village fete compared to the olympics.

I don't get it!

The mens race (haven't seen the womens yet) started with a shed load of chaps, now there is just a handful!
What's that all about! did they not know they have to cycle for a long time, that hills would be involved? and it's Scotland

How are these people picked

Not everyone is in the race to win it. Cycling is a team sport so many of the retirees will have been working for their team mates. Job done, why ride round in the rain when you are not going to place and have no further role to play. As for many of the others, they were out of their class.

Enjoyed that - I was in Glasgow recently for my cousins wedding and stayed in a hotel right next to that climb where Geraint made his attack. No mean incline that - got be getting in for 20%

Man and I thought my punctures were badly timed

Dude, it's the best that each country can offer, or chooses to offer. What's the problem with that?

With full support, and an aim of finishing, I could have worn the rigth clothing and comfortably finished at about 21kph. Would anyone have wanted to watch that???

Or perhaps I should climb off when I'm lapped in the first 2 hours ...

Anyway: 2 brilliant races, both very different. Is there an official pronunciation of Kennaugh??

Apparently they get eliminated if they are 10 minutes behind the leader at the end of a lap. Don't know how many riders that affected.

I went out to watch the women's race and about half of the men's (got too wet towards the end so went home - I certainly didn't envy the riders in those conditions. They should have had mudguards. ;)). I'm not really interested in cycle racing, but it was fun to watch the fast people on my local roads. And I wanted to wave my Welsh flag among the masses of Scottish and English ones.

Was surprised at the difference between the fastest and slowest riders in both races; I was expecting more of a big peleton but it was much more spread out.

I had no idea that the broom wagon would have an actual broom on it. :D

I think it's pretty close to Kennock or Kinnock.
