Water bike...
« on: 27 April, 2018, 02:19:44 pm »

Having a discussion with a friend about the veloviewer based tile challenges, it made us realise that in .nl, the large lakes are going to become the limit of what area one can cover, This lead the conversation in the direction of pedal based boat craft. In uk English we call them Pedalo's, the Dutch call them waterfiets - Water bike. Now to me the term water bike is more something like:

But as we talked about it more, I came to think, is a pedalo just a recumbent water bike?

Where is the line between boat, and water bike? Is a pedalo with a wahoo enough to log the square on veloviewer? Or am I just going to have to wait for the lake to freeze over and cycle over it with the spiked tyres...

I've commented elsewhere that the tiles game is giving me some deep philosophical questions, when does a bike ride become a walk? 10 miles cycling 0.5 mile walking - bike ride. Vice-versa?...hmmm

And that's before we get to the whole driving somewhere to go and ride the bike for tiles.

In my experience, a pedalo is more of a Hideously Inefficient recumbent water bike.  It would seem pretty harsh to hold it against you!

That looks a kind of fun challenge, hadn't seen it before.  I've done similar exploring locally type stuff before - nice to do a challenge without burning time and money to get to the start line first.

Of course, if you go by the cycling around the world record then you would be allowed to fly over the lake in a jet plane and still claim it ...

That Manta 5 has a 400Watts motor (and appears be getting about 100watts from the rider).  It's barely a water bike, it's just a slightly bigger motor away from being an electric hydrofoil.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

I know, it was the first vid I found, there's a solely human powered one as well but I couldn't find that. Didn't Guy Martin have a go at it?

HPB - Humane Powered Boat, is how the BHPC refer to recumbent (or otherwise) pedal boats.

However, I refer to the one I built as a pedal boat;

More or less efficient than a kayak?

Ackcherley I think I just invented a new sport. Pedal Kayakakakakakakaking!

See, it must be true, I've used capital letters 'nevryfink...

Should be about as stable as the current government.

Looking forward to the BHPC equivalent of unlimited hydroplanes with pedal assist and no upper limit on motor size or prop speed.

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

So that's Veloviewer. I think I understand it but I certainly don't get it. But then I don't ever put anything on Strava (which still doesn't stop some people "following" me!). I'm a bit disappointed, the name led me to expect something along the lines of a pedal-powered Geograph.

Yes, Decavitator is still the record holder and there don't appear to have been any serious attempts on the record, in spite of the best efforts of TV's Guy Martin, who was heard to mutter "unfinished business" more than once during the farcical proceedings that somehow got turned into a programme.
