Not good pets; they're the only cats that can't retract their claws.  Apart from one of ours, that is, who has been known to walk round the house dragging a cat bed with her  ::-)

Wombats do seem quite cute, although I suspect that as pets they're big enough to potentially cause lots of damage.

Too cute. :)

It always makes me chuckle when I see a young animal cuddling a teddy bear or other fluffy toy.  Many years ago, at the Blue Cross, where eventually Talisker came from, some of the kittens there had cuddly toys in the cages with them.  Mostly the ones that weren't sharing their cage with another kitten, I guess so that they had something to cuddle up to.

Incredibly cute, but for all that they're pygmy hippos, I bet an adult is still quite a bit larger than you'd want walking around the house!

There's nothing cute about hitapotumuses.  When they're not trying to bite you in half, they're spraying poo everywhere, and they couldn't even help you wash the car.

A baby moomin would be much more practical.
Title: Re: The squeee thread
Post by: TimO on 04 April, 2012, 08:53:01 am
Well, that's reality clashing with the appearance of cuteness.  Given that Hippos apparently kill more people than any other animal (aside from Homo Sapiens) in Africa, arguably they aren't a particularly cute animal.

Baby Pygmy Hippos are still rather cute though!

(I am biased, I have a couple of plush Hippos, Harry and Harry Jnr, and my work PC is named Hippo. :)).

Dunno, but lets take it as referring to large beasties, otherwise you also get into the realms of diseases and food poisoning.

As a human, I'm always impressed by animals who manage to give birth to young that are fully formed and just need a little rest, unfolding and encouragement before they're on their feet and ready to being the serious business of Running Away From Things.

That said, if we gave birth to fully-functional teenagers, we'd probably give up on reproduction as a bad idea entirely  :D

A baby moomin would be much more practical.

Back in the dim and distant past, some of the larger Mediterranean islands had their own pygmy fauna (a reduction in size of large animals being one of the symptoms of an isolated genepool, see Shetland Ponies*).  This included elephants.

Imagine a fully grown elephant the size of a large dog.

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

*whereas smaller animals in the same isolated population tend to be larger. See Orkney Vole. Apparently the optimum size for a mammal, if there are no predation issues, is that of a large domestic cat.

It looks like the cattery has a free dog to sleep on for every cat (or possibly the other way around!)

I'm always amazed how well cats and dogs, who've obviously been brought up with each other, get along.  You don't even say the C-word in front of my brothers dog, and my cats have not always been that comfortable in the vets waiting room, when a dog comes in!
Title: Re: The squeee thread
Post by: Kim on 28 June, 2012, 02:43:13 pm
Our local vet has an awfully sensible arrangement of a little annex to the main waiting area specifically for cats (and impromptu bike parking), allowing them to be kept well out of sight of any dogs that may come in.

While cats can get a bit political with each other across a vet's waiting room, they can be seriously terrified of overly inquisitive or barky dogs, which is the last thing they need if they're ill.  Can't say I blame them really - random dogs make me nervous, and I'm at least ten times the size of a typical cat and understand how leads and cages work.

Have we had baby hedgehogs (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/Minitar1/Random/hedgebabies.jpg) yet?

Coming back to base on Friday, we found a small hedgehog pottering about on the tarmac at the reserve entrance, watched with fascination by three lads who'd just come out of the Mosque. I steered the truck away from it, and suggested to my workmate that she get out and see if it looked alright, knowing that a hedgehog out in daylight is not usually a good sign.

She did this, but pointed out that as she'd never seen one alive before, she wasn't sure what to look for!

When she closed the truck door, it jumped, so we reckoned its reflexes were ok, and she scooped it up and placed it in some more friendly undergrowth out of harm's way. The lads remained fascinated, so I guess they'd never seen one either!

... She did this, but pointed out that as she'd never seen one alive before, she wasn't sure what to look for! ...

The St Tiggywinkles (http://www.sttiggywinkles.org.uk/) site may have some information on this.

My parents have occasionally had to take hedgehogs to the local vets, when they've got caught up in their strawberry netting.  I have managed to cuts some out in the past, but if they get really tied up, and then curl into a protective ball, the only solution is to take them to the vets, who can knock them out with some anaesthetic, so they can be untangled.  They also get the benefit that this process kills the numerous parasites which they've inevitably got, so they'll be a lot healthier for a while.

It's amusing that she's about as big as her adopted mother!  I'm guessing that she gets most of her milk from a bottle, since I don't see how she could get enough from "Mum".

It's apparently not that uncommon to have big cats adopted as kittens by domestic cats, where their birth mother can't or won't look after them.  It must appear quite ludicrous when they get older, and much bigger, although I'd guess at some point they have to isolate them from each other, for the domestic cats safety, since a big cat could accidentally badly injure a domestic cat, if mildly annoyed, or even totally accidentally.

n.b. technically not "wild things", but that rule seems to be waived on this thread :)

(the oldest one proves the rule that once they get big, all giant pandas look like people in panda suits)

Sea Otters floating in the water are pretty cute anyway, but a mother with her pup cuddled up on her is even more so!

Photos like this aren't hard to find, presumably because of the high cuteness factor, but also because mother's will often put the pup there to keep it warm.  Apparently when really young, and well groomed by their mothers, they can't sink, because there's so much air in the fur!

Baby Mabel is in first two shots

Third from the left in top photo
Head down in second pic.

She's grown a lot but her fleece is different from the adults.

Third photo is of the three young lads - 2 yearlings and a two-year-old.

Ah I wondered about that, her fleece does look a little different in the photos.

I still think that there aren't enough legs for all of the heads in the final photograph. ;D

My mum is involved in a dormouse census in Cardiff and has the privilege of being able to handle them when checking on their status. Most dormice hibernate in amongst tree roots, but this little fella decided to stay in its breeding box.

Ever wondered what a snoring dormouse sounds like...?

Useless fact learned from "Foster Dad John"; the current Cat Mum on camera is probably between ten months and one year old, and because she became pregnant young, probably before she was fully grown, it'll have in effect stunted her growth.  Her body will have put more energy into making sure the kittens grew OK, rather than completing her growth, so she'll always be a small cat.

On I F**king Love Science:
A lion and tiger and bear; oh my!

As cubs a lion, a tiger, and a bear had been owned by a drug dealer who did not properly care for them. The bear’s harness grew into his skin because the owner did not alter it as the animal grew. They had been abused and neglected early in life, but were finally rescued. The bear's harness was surgically removed.

They had been taken in by an Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary in Georgia, an institution that runs solely on donations. The staff initially tried to separate them due to obvious concerns that the three large predators would fight. During the trial of separation, the animals were uncooperative and behaved poorly. Once reunited, the three calmed down and were well behaved.

Twelve years later, the three friends spend their days playing, cuddling, and eating together. While the sanctuary would prefer to leave them together, new federal regulations on fence height are threatening to separate them. It will cost nearly half a million dollars to update the facility and meet the October deadline. A crowdsourcing donation campaign is going until Sept 24 to allow BLT to remain together as a family.

Donation page: http://bit.ly/1emso88

More info and video on BLT: http://abcn.ws/12w6LdJ

You can get updates on the three friends at Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary

Meet Goliath, the new Burrowing Owl at Kirkleatham Owl Sanctuary.

They lost one of their Burrowing Owls in September in the flash flood.  This one came from the same breeder.

Quite.  I was wanting to inform them oof the error of their ways, that a creature with a squee quotient that hight couldn't possibly be a number.

We once adopted a young cat.   KM51, he was called, for the length of the journey home.  The journey was spent earnestly discussing clever names for him, and when we emptied him onto the living room floor he immediately went to attack a plant, so Mrs W said "Oi, stop that, you squidget". so we had to put up with a cat called Squidget.  How the hell that non-existent word managed to drag itself from the recessess of her brain I shall never know...

Not sure if this should go here or in the 'I saw this and...thought of you' thread (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-45150298)

Puts me in mind of this:

First of this year's foals in the stud farm fields behind us.  Foals in their first few days are mega squee, with all that wobbling about on their toothpick legs.
Soon there will be little gangs of them charging around like mobs of over excited school children, annoying the hell out of the mares.

Is this a kitten with an emotional support duckling, or vice versa?

First foal of the year in the paddock over the river behind us. Absolutely tiny but rushing round and round its mum unsteady and stumbling occasionally. Mum's rolling on her back as in jeez, that's better.
I love that all the mares in the next field are lined up at the fence, gossiping and checking it out.

Saw a duck on the Thames near Sonning today which wasn't the usual mallard, but smaller & slimmer, more elegant looking. Colouring similar to a female mallard but more delicately patterned. Had eight ducklings. Not sure what type of duck she was.
