« on: 30 September, 2019, 10:56:55 am »
Kingston Wheelers Audax Chapter will run another Super Randonneur (SR) series of rides, consisting of 200, 300, 400 and 600 km events.  Also a repeat of our popular late season 200. And most audaciously, a brand new 1,000 km event down to Land’s End and back

Gently Bentley 200 km, Sunday 15th March
Amesbury Amble 300km , Saturday 18th April
Dauntsey Dawdle 400 km, Saturday 16th May
Wander Wye 600 km, Saturday 13th June
London – Land’s End – London 1,000 km, Wednesday 8th July
Rowlands Ramble 200 km, September, date TBC

Entries for most of these events will open tomorrow.

I'd offer you some moral support - but I have questionable morals.

No AAA points on the 1000? That seems unusual given 200km of it are through Cornwall...

last I heard it was being assessed for AAA...so watch this space...but I doubt it because although there are indeed a few big lumps here and there, there are also long benign bits and total climbing is approx 12,200m

I don't recall receiving an AAA assessment request for this, please send a link to the track through to aaa@audax.uk and I'll take a look. Quite possibly there will be a section that is hilly enough to qualify for partial AAA.

Now assessed at 12770m of climbing for 12.75 AAA and the event page updated.

The AAA man will have the final say, and I don't have an insight to the KWAC chosen route through Devon and Cornwall, but an adaption of one of my DIYs from last year (Exeter to Penzance - 200) suggests only 2564m in 214km from Exeter to Land's End:

And, from Land's End coming back to Tiverton using an adaption of the Kernow and South West 600 route going via Newquay (control), north of Bodmin Moor and via Bude (control) (223km) has only 2,518m of climbing.

These climbing figures are RwGPS ones and I'm aware that the AAA check seems generally to estimate more climb than on RwGPS. Nevertheless I reckon Rich's doubts are well founded. It's not as lumpy as generally made out to be, and not enough to merit AAA points (the KWAC route may seek out gratuitous hills, of course, but I doubt it).

I run it through the analyser and there are 3 points only in the first file, probably the same on the way back... so quite a lot actually

correct, our route generally seeks the easiest passage, e.g. using much of the old A30 from LE back to Exeter

Bear in mind that the AAA threshold drops from 15m/km for 100km to 11.67m/km for 600km+, so the example above of 'only' 2564m climbing in 214km is more than enough to qualify if that level of climbing is maintained over the full 1000km, but that's enough of me hijacking this thread for AAA ramblings...

Having taken part in all the KWAC rides since they started in 2016 I do feel a certain duty to uphold my 100% record. However the 1000km ride may be beyond me. The beer at the finish may motivate me (or I may volunteer, to get to the beer sooner!)

Neil, sounds  like your big ride for next year is sorted then.

The AAA assessed climb suggests that the climbing rate for Devon and Cornwall (both ways) does not diminish for the 500+km to and from the Devon border (1.27%).
"the KWAC route may seek out gratuitous hills, of course, but I doubt it"
correct, our route generally seeks the easiest passage, e.g. using much of the old A30 from LE back to Exeter
Well just looking at Launceston to Exeter on that 'easiest passage' old A30 on RwGPS gives 67km and 903m of climb (so probably AAA of 1000+m).
I note that the (first week in July 2020) Mille Pennines is only 'a 5 minute climb' hillier. Clearly, in the interests of a great ride/route, KWAC/Rich have found some hills, gratuitous or not. This will be a challenging and scenic ride.
