Whatever the trials and tribulations of getting old are, the alternative is worse  :)

I have taken to carrying a notebook so I can write down those fleeting thoughts as they fleet across my remaining neurons. Usually quite or very important stuff that I would otherwise unaccountably forget to do despite it being genuinely important.

The second half century is mostly downhill. Maybe the third half century sees a rebound?

Just had a weeks holiday in Italy to relax and recuperate after a few very hard months at work. Was still awake at 5:30am and up before 6:00am every day. I used to be able to lie in.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Ditto. Have you mastered the art of remembering that you have a notebook, and looking in it regularly? That's what I now find difficult.

The next step is remembering which notebook you wrote it down in and where you put it?

I've just bought cakes (well, donuts) for my stepdaughter's 19th birthday, which is tomorrow. The 6th of Nov.

Oh, hang on - checks calendar. It's the 26th of November.

In mitigation I have 4 step-children and 2 kids of my owne and remembering all their birthdays is confusing.

No doubt people will still be randomly letting off fireworks then.   >:(

(When did fireworks stop being inherently cool[1] and become low-level irritating?  Sure sign of getting old, that.)

I have a knitting injury.

OK, stop laughing, my hands are extremely painful and  I visited our local quack, took a look at them and he said what had I been doing, I explained that to make my mind concentrate on other things I've tasked myself to knit a lace scarf. Ahh he said, you have a knitting injury, I don't know how he kept a straight face, do a couple of rows and then squeeze a gel ball a few times, should be alright in a few days.

In the meantime it's bloody painful, I'm having problems lifting my whisky and orange at night time.

I gave up knitting because it exacerbated the RSI I get from using a mouse, which I decided was far more important.

Ouch, as much as people want to laugh, hand injuries are horrid and very disabling.

I hope the docs advice works and it soon passes because that sounds very annoying and painful.

T'other day I was shooting the breeze outside a cafe with a couple of the cyclists. Young, like me I thought.

I explained a bit about why I was riding a fixer, how I cope with hills, how nice it is ect ect.

We then went our separate ways.

"Thank you sir" said one of them, in what sounded like the tone some people use when addressing someone older (and wiser?) than themselves.
There are two ways you can get exercise out of a bicycle: you can
"overhaul" it, or you can ride it.  (Jerome K Jerome)

May I recommend to Marj the remedy of putting whisky in one glass and orange in another? There are three advantages:-

1. The orange tastes better.
2. The whisky tastes better.
3. Having divided, and therefore lightened, the load, you are less likely to exacerbate your hand injury.
